“Switched at Birth” Season 5 is set to premiere on the newly rebranded Freeform this April. This confirmation comes from the show’s executive producer Lizzy Weiss.
She posted a photo of the premiere episode title on her Twitter page to confirm that the fifth season of the teen/family drama is set to return in less than three months.
This is the first season of the show to premiere on Freeform as all four premiered on its former name, ABC Family.
Apart from the first season which premiered in June, the fifth season is the only season not to premiere on January to date.
Although no specific date and no number of episodes have been confirmed, the season is set to answer the burning questions left during the Season 4’s finale.
According to Weiss, the season premiere is going to pick up moments after last season’s cliffhanger and fans are going to know what the call that Katie Leclerc’s Daphne and Vanessa Marano’s Bay received was about.
The premiere episode, entitled “The Call,” highly suggests that viewers will know who the caller was from and what was it all about.
Last season ended with what was initially thought to be on a good note as Toby and Lily finally welcomed a wonderful baby boy they named Carlton and 10 months later, Bay and Daphne are revealed to have traveled to China together until they received a call from home.
Speaking to The Wrap, the showrunner admits that she and the writers are still having quite a hard time to figure out the perfect cliffhanger answer for the upcoming season.
Weiss also explained why it was necessary to feature a 10-month time jump at the very end of Season 4.
According to the showrunner, this would allow the TV series to realistically portray Bay as someone who managed to learn some Mandarin and become a tattoo artist and it was enough time also to let Daphne get a job at a clinic.
Weiss says that that not everything was fleshed out for the fifth installment of the family drama, but there was already a general plan. She adds that they had a million ideas for what the cliffhanger would have been and they might still use a couple of them.
Speculations say that the call was from their parents, John and Kathryn, played by D.W Moffet and Lea Thompson, respectively, who are informing them of their divorce.
The divorce between John and Kathryn was already foreseen last season as they argued almost on everything. The two argued when Toby told them about Lily being pregnant and last season’s finale had them arguing about the car wash deal.
This could be a possibility as Daphne’s reaction to the call was not a pleasant one. The phone call is said to force the two to pack their bags and go back home as soon as possible so they can prevent their parents from breaking up.
However, some fans say that it’s not a possibility as in reality, parents would normally talk to their children about important matters like this in person and not inform them over the phone.
Christian Post reports that the call may have something to do with Lucas Grabeel’s Lucas and Rachel Shenton’s Lily’s newborn baby.
This could also be a possibility as Lily and Toby had a huge baby drama over the past season. They argued whether they should raise the baby in London or in Kansas with the Kennishes.
Some reports say that if the call was indeed about their nephew baby Carlton, it is one good reason for Daphne and Bay to leave their newly-formed lives in China and fly back to Kansas.
