‘Switched at Birth’ Season 5 to Feature a 10-Month Time Jump, Confirms Showrunner!

Season 5 of the American teen/family drama “Switched at Birth” on Freeform will have a 10-month time jump when it airs this coming April, confirms series creator Lizzy Weiss.

In a recent interview, Weiss revealed that there will be a time jump when Season 5 of “Switched at Birth” returns to Freeform, the former ABC Family network, and it will feature what happened to Bay, played by Vanessa Marano, and Daphne, played by Katie Leclerc, during the past 10 months.

Weiss said that she and the show writers wanted to add a cliffhanger so that if the show was lucky enough to come back in the future, they have something to jump off to, details the Vine Report.

She added that it felt natural to jump the show a little bit and take the cast of characters into their future. She thinks that there are a lot of stuff that can be talked about and those questions would all be answered when the show returns in April.

Weiss explained that it was necessary for Bay and Daphne to stay in a different country for 10 months instead of the originally planned six-week vacation as it helps establish how Daphne landed her job and Bay got to learn a little of Mandarin.

The fate of their parents

Weiss also teased that another important plotline of Season 5 is the fate of the parents of the two girls.

It could be recalled that during the Season 4 finale of “Switched at Birth,” Bay and Daphne received an important phone call which asked them to pack their bags in China and go home to Kansas as soon as possible.

Viewers have been speculating that Bay and Daphne can actually help patch things up between their parents before the probability of divorce comes into the picture.

There are reports that Season 5 of “Switched at Birth” would also focus on the struggles of the first-time parents Toby Kennish, played by Lucas Grabeel, and Lily Summers, played by Rachel Shenton, as Weiss also hinted that the arrival of the baby has been part of the larger series conversation about difference.

Tying up loose ends

The upcoming premiere episode of Season 5 of “Switched at Birth” is reportedly titled “The Call” and it is likely meant to tie up loose ends during the big cliffhanger in the Season 4 finale, notes the Ecumenical News.

Given how the fourth season of the TV series ended, the first episode of Season 5 appears very aptly titled, according to viewers and critics.

Most of the rumors state that Bay and Daphne would rush back home to Kansas because John and Kathryn Kennish will finally call it quits and have their marriage divorced.

Weiss recently shared some details about the upcoming Season 5 of “Switched at Birth.” She said that the next season will be loaded with events because she and the writers will be inputting a lot of ideas into the plot. But she also expressed caution that not everything about the TV series has been confirmed just yet.

The showrunner also confirmed that one of the reasons why Bay and Daphne would return is due to the relationship problems of Kathryn, played by Lea Thompson, and John, played by D.W. Moffett.

She also hinted that the two could indeed be facing divorce in subsequent episodes of Season 5. Kathryn is apparently dealing with financial woes as she has been freaking out about losing the car wash business and having money problems too. She is also getting worried about becoming a grandmother so soon.

Weiss said that they really thought that it would be fun to see Kathryn panic. However, she also seemed to offer a way out of the relationship woes when she said that in everybody’s marriage, there are bumps so everyone must work and push past them.
