Supergirl has perhaps started off as just one of many superhero shows, but with every episode, it proves that it is much more. SPOILER ALERT – we got a glimpse of an upcoming episode and some cool powers Mr. Mxyzptlk has!
Now, this show has a powerful following, people who can’t wait to see what happens next, and which DC universe characters will be introduced. And as far as we can see, Mr. Mxy’s appearance shall not leave them disappointed.
Who is he?
In case you have not ran into Mr. Mxyzptlk before, here is in short what he is like in comics – a prankster who has absolute power over everyone in our universe. He loves playing with our Earth because Superman is his favorite toy. He keeps thinking of new challenges to put in front of him, like creating new levels in a game, in hopes Sups will not be able to win.
He is originally from the fifth dimension, which explains his powers in our world. Our world is in 3D. When we compare our powers to the powers of a drawn bunny on a piece of paper – we seem omnipotent, right? Now add 2 more dimensions, and you will start to get a grasp on the extent of his powers.
Now that you know his backstory, you realize there was a real chance for CW to mess this up. But, they didn’t!
The 1st sneak peek
“Supergirl” really gave Mr.Mxyzptlk (Peter Gadiot) some awesome magic powers. In the preview clip, Mr. Mxy uses magic to turn Kara’s apartment into a perfect venue for a wedding proposal. He puts flowers, candles, and even a string quartet into her humble abode, to go down on one knee only moments later, and ask for Kara’s hand in marriage with an engagement ring he summoned out of thin air.
Yes, according to the lore, he is a magical being from the fifth dimension, and as such, according to the laws of the DC universe, omnipotent, but still – we are impressed.
Of course, at the moment all of this is happening, Mon-El is with Kara in the apartment. He stops Mr.Mxy and tells him he’s with her. And what does our charming little imp do as a response? He magicks the Daxamite to the DEO with only his undergarments on – a subtle show of just how big of a threat Mxy thinks Mon-El is.
As if that wasn’t enough, Mxy puts our lovely Kryptonian into an even lovelier Vera Wang wedding dress and repeats his question. Kara will not fall for him that easily, but we have a feeling he will not be so easily dissuaded.
The 2nd sneak peek
In this one, the Girl of Steel stops a trio of criminals. They, in return, try to get away by firing bullets at her. When she reminds them it really won’t do her any harm, Mr. Mxyzptlk appears from glittery dust and uses magic to turn the weapons against the criminals.
In the beginning, Kara does not see him as a threat, but we can bet he will wreak havoc in the National City.
Funny, charming, and Supergirl’s biggest challenge yet.
Here’s how Peter Gadiot explained why getting rid of his character will be so difficult in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter: “He’s very, very formidable because he can’t really be defeated,” the “Once Upon a Time in Wonderland” alum said. “He’s unbeatable. You can’t kill him or banish him. His powers kind of supersede everybody’s. … Really the only way to beat him is to out trick him. You have to be crafty and essentially play his game. If you don’t play his game, then you’re going to lose.”
The actor is a DC fan himself. So as we hoped, he commented on the fact that he is not an imp, as we have expected him to be. “They very much keep the essence true in that he’s a devious, playful … and he still has that cheeky, naughty quality of creating havoc but not in an evil way,” the 31-year-old actor explained. “He has the ability to morph and change… The essence is the same but the appearance is a new take.”
In the comics, the only way to banish Mr. Mxyzptlk is to make him say his own name backwards, so we are curious to see if this will be the way Kara and Mon-El get rid of him? Or will they think of a prank to outprank the prankster?
