It’s official. Melissa Benoist of “Glee” will play the role of “Supergirl” which will soon be hitting the airwaves as a TV series on the CBS network.
Benoist has been chosen by people from Berlanti Productions, Warner Bros, and DC Entertainment who are joining forces for the TV series, which is reportedly already in development, reveals DC Comics.
Greg Berlanti and Ali Adler made the announcement on Twitter by posting that the 26-year-old Benoist, who was previously known as Mary Rose on “Glee,” will play the titular role of “Supergirl.”
A superhero in waiting
She will play the role of Kara Zor-el, the cousin of Kal-el, who’s also known on earth as Clark Kent, the alter ego of Superman.
Just like Kal-el, Kara escaped the destruction of her home planet Krypton and arrived on earth. She will be known as Kara Danvers on earth.
Her character was already introduced and played out in several episodes during the nine seasons of the TV series “Smallville” previously.
And similar to the story of Kal-el or Clark Kent when he came to earth, the plot of “Supergirl” will revolve around the internal dilemma of a Kryptonian girl whether or not she will show off her extraordinary powers lest she get typecast by her friends.
But at the age of 24, she finally decided to embrace the power of the earth’s yellow sun and eventually become the superhero that she is destined to be.
Commitment and other cast to be filled up
Greg Berlanti, who is also the executive producer of the TV series “Arrow,” which is also a spinoff from “Smallville” will be producing the upcoming show “Supergirl” with support from Ali Adler and Sarah Schecter. He disclosed that the show has already made a commitment to CBS. They’re also producing the “The Flash” TV series.
It was not clear how Melissa Benoist was chosen to play the titular role of “Supergirl” or who were the other actors being considered for the role but from their post on social media, it was clear that Greg Berlanti was proud of making a good and the right choice in Melissa.
Melissa Benoist can be seen in the movie “Whiplash” currently being shown on theaters, where she stars with Nicole, the would-be girlfriend of Andrew, the movie’s young drum prodigy. “Whiplash” is also an Oscar-nominated film and that’s a credit to Melissa and the other cast members too.
“Supergirl” will be CBS’ first superhero TV series in years.
In addition to Melissa Benoist playing the titular role, other characters to be filled in the TV series are that of photographer Jimmy Olsen, Cat Grant, and Alex Danvers, Kara’s foster sister.
Berlanti is expected to make the announcement again once actors for these major characters of the upcoming TV series have been chosen already.
