‘Super Smash Bros 4’ Gamers Find New DLC Characters Unnecessarily Expensive

Nintendo has added at least four crossover characters to the fighting video game “Super Smash Bros 4” up to June and they include Mewtwo from “Pokemon,” Ryu from “Street Fighter,” Roy from “Fire Emblem,” and Lucas from “Mother 3.” All the characters came to the game via DLC.

“Super Smash Bros 4” is also known as “Super Smash Bros” and it was first released in Japan in September last year and subsequently in North America and in other regions late in October 2014.

DLC is a new strategy for the “Super Smash Bros 4” of Nintendo. Roy and Lucas have become available for $3.99 on Wii U or Nintendo 3DS, or $4.99 for both game versions. Ryu, on the other hand, comes with the Suzaku Castle stage from “Street Fighter” and is available for $5.99 on either gaming console or for $6.99 for both.

The “Super Smash Bros will also get new Mii Fighter costumes soon from other video games like “Virtua Fighter,” “Tekken,” and “Animal Crossing.” The Dreamland stage from the original “Super Smash Bros” for Nintendo 64 will likewise return to the Wii U and 3DS along with a few tweaks.

The Guardian of UK thinks despite the critical and popular success of “Super Smash Bros 4,” the DLC that brought the latest mix of characters and Mii outfits still seems unnecessarily expensive.

The site also added that among the character additions to the game, only Ryu fits naturally into the fighting game because his unique movements allow for a very technical execution, making him the best third-party inclusion in the series thus far.

As for Roy and Lucas, the two new DLC characters actually resemble the moves of the existing characters in the game – Marth and Ness – so their inclusion appears to be redundant. It’s as if Roy and Lucas were included in the DLC to prompt fans of previous Smash games into buying the bigger pack.

Buying Ryu would already be sufficient but putting Roy and Lucas on the mix eventually shows how unnecessarily expensive the new DLC is.

Latest update

Nintendo released the new 1.0.9 update to “Super Smash Bros 4” early this month specifically for the Wii U gaming platform even though the game is available in both the 3DS and Wii U versions.

The latest update came with improvements on the online multiplayer features of the “Super Smash Bros 4,” ensuring better gaming experience to players.

However, in order to get the update, gamers are required to download the current game to the Wii U platform before the 1.0.9 patch can be installed and experienced. The previous 1.0.8 update was previously released and provided new Mii verse stage found in the Smash mode, notes Christian Today.

No fan voting for DLC characters

While some fans of “Super Smash Bros 4” may have thought that it was because of their votes that Nintendo decided to bring in new fighting characters from other video games, the truth is it is not.

According to Game Director Masahiro Sakurai in his column in Famitsu magazine, Ryu, Roy, and Lucas were already in development long before Nintendo decided on the fan vote idea.

It was only in April when Nintendo hatched a program allowing fans to vote on which fighters they would like to see added on “Super Smash Bros 4” as DLC characters.

Sakurai also disclosed that gamers should expect to see more characters added to “Super Smash Bros 4” as DLC in the next couple of months until the point that the development team can no longer work together as one.

Meanwhile, astute gamer Master0fHyrule lauded Nintendo’s perfect integration of Ryu to “Super Smash Bros.” While it was a big risk on the part of Nintendo considering that Ryu carries with him 25 years worth of “Street Fighter” titles, great care was taken by the developer to ensure the seamless integration of Ryu into the “Super Smash Bros 4” fighting roster.
