The first half of “Suits” Season 6 ended with a lot of shocking events. It wrapped up two major storylines the season have been tackling.
For one, it ended Mike Ross’ stint in prison as well as Rachel and Jessica’s Innocence Project death row case.
Fans will remember that by the end of Season 5, the firm was busted for the fraudulent activities it has done for hiring Mike. Mike, on the other hand, turns himself in for a two-year prison sentence to save the firm and its employees.
After tackling his life in prison for the past nine episodes, Mike is now a free man. Despite having an order to steer clear of the firm, he couldn’t resist helping Rachel win Leonard Bailey’s case.
Mike also informs Rachel that Harvey has offered him to come back in the firm as a consultant. While this may seem as a no-brainer for Mike, many were shocked when he accepted the offer.
Probably the bigger revelation apart from Mike’s freedom is the departure of Gina Torres’ Jessica Pearson. Pearson was earlier reported to have been cast as the lead in an ABC TV series but stated that she would remain a series regular until her exit.
Jessica leaving the show was no longer a surprise. The season was already building up the moment she would eventually say goodbye. Torres says that her character has had five-and-a-half seasons worth of character development and she’s very thankful for that.
Torres adds that Jessica’s decision to leave the firm was for herself because somewhere along those five years, she lost herself and learned a lot of other things that she wants to accomplish.
Pearson Spectre Litt’s smart and poised managing partner decided to leave the corporate business and move to Chicago with Jeff Malone after successfully defending death-row inmate Leonard Bailey.
Helping Bailey reminded Jessica that it was her desire to help the people who inspired her to become a lawyer. Her scenes with Harvey and Louis in the episode was an emotional one where she says that PSL is not her firm anymore.
Entertainment Weekly notes that the flashback to Jessica’s childhood was a nice touch to pay homage to the character.
Speaking to Deadline, executive producer Aaron Korsh discusses the possibility of Jessica reappearing as the guest star and a plot that almost killed the beloved character.
The showrunner says that he thinks it’s not the last of Jessica in the show. He admits that they are still trying to negotiate Torres’ schedule and if she could accommodate “Suits” then they will be happy to have her back from time to time.
Korsh also reveals and initial plan that involved Jessica’s exit leading to her death. Luckily, this plan was scrapped by the network as early as pitching it.
The executive producer addresses what will become of Harvey and Louis now that Jessica is gone. He teases fans that Jessica’s absence will impact the two because it would mean a lot in a surprisingly emotional way.
He says that it will affect Louis more since Jessica has been a mother/mentor figure for him all throughout the show. He adds that the adjustment period the two men will have will surprise a lot of fans.
It was a balance for Louis that Tara has accepted his marriage proposal. Korsh says that it will lighten the burden on the character and make Jessica’s exodus more bearable.
Harvey was already seen struggling with handling board meetings because he has grown accustomed to Jessica dealing with all the firm’s meetings.
Korsh also teases if Mike will accept the offer to come back at the firm and if Robert Zane’s merger offer be accepted or not.
