We do hope that they will be able to come up with a system for fighting cheaters that works though, as this has been a problem for not only “Street Fighter V”, but online games in general for quite a while now.
There doesn’t seem to be a good solution on the horizon, as most of the options available to developers tend to interfere with players’ ability to enjoy the games to some extent. We’ve seen various experiments in this regard, but in the end most players are firmly against anti-cheating tools, including those who play legitimately.
One of the biggest issues is when a tool is prone to false positives – something which “Punkbuster” is known for, as an example – but this is difficult to balance against the other extreme.
Which is leaving cheaters to roam free in a game, and that’s definitely just as harmful to it as the other option. There is just no way for developers to win right now, but this doesn’t mean that it’s acceptable to go for solutions like compromising the security of players.
Capcom deserve the backlash they’re going to get over this, and hopefully the situation is going to discourage other developers from even attempting to solve their cheating problems with a tool like that. In the end, someone has to serve as an example for the others.
