With 2016 about to draw to a close, a review of the year saw the ups and downs in the careers of some celebrities. A number of upstarts got their careers going this year, particularly a good number of stars of the very popular HBO-hit series “Game of Thrones.”
Nowadays, the likes of Emilia Clarke, Sophie Turner, and Kit Harrington are already household names and it looks like their careers will continue to flourish in the years to come.
In the movies, the superhero genre continues to dominate which is why actors on Marvel and DC movies had the biggest gains in their careers, not to mention, in their pockets too.
On the opposite side of the spectrum are the stars who saw their careers crumbling this year and are regarded as the biggest celebrity losers of 2016.
Fox News made a list of the biggest celebrity losers of the current year and it had six on its list led by no other than Billy Bush.
The lies did him in
Billy Bush had just been selected to be a co-host for the third hour of NBC’s “Today” show when his career came crashing down.
He caught the attention of the media when he became the first to interview Ryan Lochte following his now-debunked claims that he was robbed at gunpoint in Rio during the Olympics.
After Lochte’s lies became apparent, Bush’s credibility was questioned when he got into a heated debate about the swimmer with co-host Al Roker on the air.
But the real demise of Bush’s career came in October when a years-old tape was leaked of Bush and Donald Trump having a lewd conversation about women. As a result, Bush was fired from NBC.
Next on the ignominious list is media website Gawker, which lost everything in 2016. Gawker.com was shut down after Gawker Media declared bankruptcy in the aftermath of a $140 million judgment against it in the Hulk Hogan invasion-of-privacy case.
Hogan sued the company for publishing excerpts from a private sex tape he claims was filmed without his consent. Gawker founder, Nick Denton, a former Financial Times journalist, also filed for personal bankruptcy at the time.
The media company was purchased by Univision, but Denton could not convince the buyer to take on the highly-controversial site Gawker.com, so it published its last article in August and shut down completely.
Falling down the food chain
Dustin Diamond, better known as Screech from “Saved by the Bell,” is third in the list. He has never been on Hollywood’s A-list, but he fell further down the food chain in 2016.
The 39-year-old went to jail in June after being arrested on a probation hold. The actor was sentenced to four months in jail after stabbing a man during an altercation at a bar.
He got out one month early but then violated his probation by failing a routine drug test and he was sent back to the slammer.
The fourth on the list is interestingly not a celebrity but a group of people who works for a famous celebrity, Kim Kardashian, notes Hoholok.com.
Though not technically celebrities in their own rights, Kim Kardashians long-time bodyguards were familiar with her loyal fan base, and they had a pretty awful 2016.
Kardashian was robbed at gunpoint in Paris in October. It turned out that Kardashian’s most familiar bodyguard Pascal Duvier was out with Khloe Kardashian and Kendall Jenner partying at a French club.
Kim Kardashian’s high-paid security team suffered the consequences and was fired in the aftermath of the robbery. Accordingly, it was Kanye West’s decision because he does not want any lapse in judgment to happen considering that he and Kim now have two kids already.
And then there is the controversial Nick Gordon, the boyfriend of Bobbi Kristina Brown. When news of Brown’s death saddened the world in 2015, her family quickly pointed the finger at her boyfriend Nick Gordon.
