While “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” will still hit cinemas on December 18 which is barely four months away, many are already predicting that the movie will eventually beat the success of “Jurassic World” when it was shown in June on course to becoming the biggest grossing movie of 2015.
With over $1.6 billion in earnings, “Jurassic World” is now officially the third highest-grossing movie of all time, next only to “Avatar“ and “Titanic.”
“Jurassic World” reached the $1 billion box-office mark in 13 days, making it the fastest grossing film of all time. The movie also set the biggest global opening box-office revenue when it posted $524.4 million.
Many experts believe that it was not actually the film or the story of the movie that fans were attracted to, because frankly the storyline of “Jurassic World” was hardly groundbreaking or creative at all. Critics believe that it was more on the long wait that the movie generated because the first “Jurassic Park” movie was shown more than 20 years ago while the third installment was shown more than 15 years ago.
If that is to be the same basis for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” then the longer wait and the excitement, plus the fact that the “Star Wars” franchise is more popular, then it is likely that it will indeed fare better than “Jurassic World.”
Record worldwide opening
According to Deadline, many are predicting that “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” will actually make $615 million from its worldwide opening and will go down in history as the fastest grossing film of all time vice the short-term reign on the title of “Jurassic World.”
The movie is also expected to break the $1 billion box-office sales mark faster than 13 days. In fact, experts are already predicting that Disney and Lucasfilm shall be able to recoup their $200 million investment in making the “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” in historic record time.
It is also expected that the seventh “Star Wars” movie will become the third highest grossing movie of all time and may actually give the second running “Titanic” a challenge, especially with the fact that the movie will also be shown on all Imax theaters during its month of release.
The Hollywood Reporter said that Imax is going really big for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” Accordingly, for the first four weeks of the movie starting on December 18, the film will have all of Imax’s large-format screens in North America and most of its foreign screens around the world all to itself.
Imax has previously reserved all of its screens for a single movie in a month, but it is quite unusual actually. It only shows how the company sees the blockbuster potentials of a certain movie. It has done it in June with “Jurassic World” and also with “Iron Man 3” back in 2013. And as everyone knows, the two movies are part of the elite billion dollar club. The same is expected for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” no less.
Big news for the franchise
Disney has been all-out in its promotions of the movie. After showing the movie’s first trailer during the “Star Wars Celebration” held in April at Anaheim, California, Disney had its director and cast members appear at the ComicCon 2015 held in San Diego, California last month and also showed the film’s full-length trailer.
On August 16, the third day of the three-day D23 Expo held again at Anaheim, California, Disney had the director and cast members of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” participate in the event.
But instead of merely promoting the movie for its release in December, the team from “Star Wars 7” practically stole the show when it made several live-action presentations, a lot of displays, and statements from the director and key cast members.
