Star Trek: Beyond Filming Underway; Stars to Receive Hefty Pay for 3rd Movie!

Now that word is out that the third Star Trek film will be titled “Star Trek: Beyond,” more details about the movie’s upcoming release will hit the internet soon. For starters, the third installment to the science-fiction reboot movie is due to hit theaters on July 8 next year, just in time for Star Trek’s 50th anniversary. The film will also be helmed by Director Justin Lin, who directed four movies in the “Fast & Furious” franchise.

Lin took over JJ Abrams, who directed the first two “Star Trek” movie reboots. “Star Trek” debuted in 2009 and its sequel “Star Trek: Into the Darkness” was released in 2013. Abrams has moved on to direct another iconic franchise “Star Wars.” But he shall remain with “Star Trek: Beyond” as one of its producers.

According to the Vine Report, the timeline of the movie will match the phase of the characters’ five-year space mission as depicted in the original TV series. Lin said that as great as the last two films were, it still gives him plenty of things to explore more of the characters and other worlds. Writer Robert Orci confirmed Lin’s statement by saying that the third film will be closer to the original series compared to the previous two movies.

On June 29, Lin posted on his Twitter account a close-up photo of the Star Trek logo in denim, appearing to be the team’s uniform delta insignia, with the word Starfleet embroidered on it. Fans have noticed that the logo seemed to have a retro look, implying that the upcoming film will go back in time and space.

The caption of the photo confirms the film’s title and it also came with the phrase ‘Long Live and Prosper,” made famous by the late actor Leonard Nimoy. He played Spock in the original TV series and several other films that followed. The 83-year old actor died due to complications from a pulmonary disease last February.

Possible plot

With the film’s plot still kept under wraps, rumor has it that the film will mirror 1984’s “Star Trek III: The Search for Spock” as “Star Trek: Into the Darkness” was a basically a reboot of the 1982 film “Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan.” The reported plot is a major possibility as it gives producers a better arena to pay its homage to Nimoy and his character Spock. Speculations are swirling around that the film will also pay respect to the series’ first episode, which will have aired 50 years ago by 2016. News of new female leads being weaved into the film are also spreading, but no confirmation has been made yet by the production team.

Amid several delays, expect more of the film’s plot to unfold especially that the cast is now filming in Vancouver, Canada. Speaking to Slashfilm, Skydance Entertainment CEO David Ellison confirms that filming will also take place in Dubai, citing that the location alone evokes interest already.

Stars Zachary Quinto and Zoe Zaldana have been giving fans a peek of filming by posting behind-the-scene shots on their Instagram accounts. Zaldana recently posted a photo of her getting ready for filming. Quinto, for his part, posted an image of him donning his Spock costume and about to start filming. The 38-year-old actor also made a shout to loyal fans encouraging them to support Adam Nimoy, son of the late Leonard Nimoy who produced a campaign documentary in honor of his father.

Pay increase

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the original cast members of the movie including Chris Pine, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, John Cho, Quinto, and Zaldana had last-minute negotiations with Paramount and Skydance Entertainment before entering the film’s production phase. Originally, the cast had signed on for the film’s reboot with the option of two more sequels, but due to the franchise’s slow progress not to mention the casts’ growing star power, huge raises had to be made in their pay rates. The cast members signed their original contracts way back in 2007 so their pay rates are quite outdated already.
