Late last year, reports went circling around that the “Spider-Man” reboot movie starring Tom Holland could possibly have a title of “Spectacular Spider-Man” which would differentiate it from Tobey Maguire’s “Spider-Man” series and Andrew Garfield’s “The Amazing Spider-Man” series.
However, in a press release for “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2” issued by Marvel Studios this week, the production company mentioned of several upcoming movies including a listing for “Spider-Man” due to hit theaters on July 7, 2017.
The July 7, 2017 release date is a change from the July 28, 2017 previously announced release date for the third reboot movie of the web-slinging superhero.
All of the Marvel movie releases up to 2019 have already been officially titled and the upcoming “Spider-Man” film is the only one that has not been officially named.
Assuming the latest press release on “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2” is on target, then Marvel has decided to give it the same name as the 2002 Tobey Maguire-starrer. Critics believe that it’s an odd move on the part of Marvel Studio if the “Spider-Man” title is finalized, notes Cinema Blend.
They cited several movies that tend to change their title if it is to reboot an old franchise. The Edward Norton-starrer Hulk movie back in 2008 was titled “The Incredible Hulk” to distinguish it from the 2003 predecessor film starring Eric Bana, which was simply titled as “Hulk.”
In the case of Henry Cavill’s “Man of Steel,” it was a deviation from the Brandon Routh-starrer reboot called “Superman Returns” shown in 2006 and also Christopher Reeve’s “Superman” which began in 1978.
Keeping it simple
But keeping the title simple also works like in the case of “Iron Man” which is not as elaborate or detailed as something like “Invincible Iron Man.”
Critics think that Marvel Studio should have come up with something more catchy because the “Spider-Man” reboot may definitely need a dazzling title.
However, whatever title that the “Spider-Man” reboot movie is called, Tom Holland will definitely have his day in the sun come the summer of 2017, which is to be directed by Jon Watts and to be written by John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein.
The Marvel Studio press release indicates the following movies and release dates including “Captain America: Civil War” on May 6, 2016; “Doctor Strange” on November 4, 2016; “Spider-Man” on July 7, 2017; and “Thor: Ragnarok” on November 3, 2017.
As for “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” according to the press release, the movie shall boast of new additions to the cast including Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, and Chris Sullivan. Most importantly, Kurt Russell, a.k.a. Snake Plissken himself, joined the movie too, notes Inverse.
A baptism of fire
Prior to the “Spider-Man” reboot movie, brothers Anthony and Joe Russo will be directing Tom Holland as “Spider-Man” first in “Captain America: Civil War,” due to hit theaters on May 6.
Interestingly, Anthony and Joe Russo plans to phase in Tom Holland’s Spider-Man character in “Captain America: Civil War” into the Marvel Cinematic Universe without really affecting his stand-alone movie to come out more than a year later.
In a recent interview, Anthony and Joe Russo said that they want Marvel’s Spider-Man to be different from previous incarnations of the iconic wall-crawler.
One of the most important components that they saw in the character which the brothers wants to maintain on the reboot movie is that Peter Parker is a high schooler burdened with incredible powers and responsibility. They said that the attribute really differentiates Spider-Man from every other character in the Marvel universe.
They also added that the previous films had adults playing a high schooler. Anthony and Joe said that they wanted more authenticity to the casting and they were very specific about that.
The Russo brothers also confirmed that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man character will exude an energy and charisma as well as insecurity that would really make him fun to watch, in contrast to the usually confident superheroes.
They also confirmed previous reports that the “Spider-Man” reboot movie will be skipping the iconic origin story.
