Almost two years ago, Marvel tapped “Cabin in the Woods” director Drew Goddard to be the executive producer of the”Daredevil” TV series on Netflix. In May 2014, Goddard had to withdraw from his showrunner duties with “Daredevil” when Sony Pictures tapped him to write and direct the “Sinister Six” film from “The Amazing Spider-Man” universe.
Unfortunately, the project went up in smoke when Sony forged an agreement with Marvel in February this year. The agreement also came with the decision to reboot the Spider-Man franchise and they agree to sign up Goddard to helm the film. But for some reasons, the directorial seat for the “Spider-Man” reboot movie went to Jon Watts of “Cop’s Car.”
Speaking to Cinema Blend while promoting “The Martian,” Goddard explained why he wasn’t chosen to direct the “Spider-Man” movie reboot. The 40-year-old filmmaker said that timing was one reason for him to pass on the film. He adds that he has no bad blood with Marvel since he’s worked with them a number of times already.
Goddard points out that it was difficult for him to write a new movie considering the setting and appearance of Peter Parker’s alter ego in “Captain America: Civil War.” He admits working for over a year with “Sinister Six” and suddenly being informed of the reboot of the “Spider-Man” movie series, he felt like he just spaced out.
The Texas-born director states that he has so much respect for Marvel, but he believes that it was not the proper time for him to be part of the project.
As per Venture Capital Post, this doesn’t necessarily mean that Goddard wouldn’t direct future “Spider-Man” films. He said it himself that it was all about timing and that sooner or later, they’ll eventually find the right project for him.
Beyond that, he reiterated that he will remain a fan of the Spider-Man franchise and that he loved the Spider-Man films, all five of them, Highly Cited reports.
As for the new Spider-Man himself, the new Peter Parker, portrayed by Tom Holland, will debut when “Captain America: Civil War” premieres on May 6, 2016. The 19-year-old actor will then star in Jon Watt’s solo “Spider-Man” movie slated for a July 28, 2017 release. Filming is scheduled to begin in June of next year.
According to Screen Crush, writers Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein, who will be writing the script for the latest Spidey reboot, recently confirmed that Holland had already shot his Spider-Man cameo in the upcoming Captain America movie. The writing duo is credited for their works such as “Vacation,” “Horrible Bosses,” and “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2.”
According to Digital Spy, no one still has an idea on what will be the storyline for the still-untitled “Spider-Man” movie reboot although it was mentioned by earlier reports that the upcoming superhero film will not be another origin story and will feature Peter Parker in high school struggling with his life and power.
Cinema Blend notes that Sony Pictures aimed to look for a younger actor to portray the wall-crawler so he can apparently grow into the role, implying they have the intention to extend the latest franchise into multiple films.
Reports say that when the latest “Spider-Man” film hits theaters in 2017, it will feature Iron Man, played by Robert Downey Jr., crafting an Iron Spider costume for Peter. Speculations are also rife that Spidey will encounter a new foe in the form of Kraven the Hunger.
Avid comic book fans know that Tony Stark was directly involved in providing the web-slinging superhero his Iron Spider outfit and they expect no less than the same treatment as it heads for the big screen.
When Spider-Man makes an appearance in “Captain America: Civil War,” he takes Stark’s side in the conflict between Iron Man and Captain America on the Superhero Registration Act declared by the US government. Peter’s decision to ally with Stark gives the latter time to work on some improvements for his costume.
By the looks of it, the newest Spidey reboot aims to share no DNA of the previous “Spider-Man” and “The Amazing Spider-Man” franchises which featured Toby Maguire and Andrew Garfield as the wall-climbing superhero, respectively.
