Marvel Studios has already made up its mind that the next actor who shall take on the role of the web-slinging superhero in the “Spider-Man” reboot is going to be Tom Holland.
While his solo movie is slated for a July 28, 2017 release, Tom Holland as Spider-Man will make his debut next year in “Captain America: Civil War” to be shown on May 6, 2016.
Despite the official casting of the 19-year-old English actor as Peter Parker a.k.a Spider-Man, teen Bryshere Y. Gray, who plays Hakeem a.k.a. Yazz the Greatest on the TV series “Empire” on Fox, is still vying to play the role of the Marvel superhero in a future installment of “Spider-Man.”
Gray apparently knows his Spider-Man comic book because the wall-climbing superhero is currently being played by a biracial teen named Miles Morales as the new Spider-Man.
But since Marvel Studios is sticking with Peter Parker as Spidey’s alter-ego, they have decided to pick another white kid following Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.
Meanwhile, Gray has begun his campaign to become the first black Spider-Man as he posed for Paper magazine in full costume display, reports Vulture.
He claims he was born to play Spider-Man and was also quoted as saying that he is young and pretty and represents the youth in America. He also says that he speaks to the youth in a way nobody can at this time. He said that he is also the American Idol.
Gray said that he likes to climb and fly through the sky and that he would look amazing in the Spider-Man outfit.
Set to deliver crowd-pleasing performance
Despite initial apprehensions of critics over his capability to perform and deliver as Peter Parker / Spider-Man, Tom Holland is unperturbed.
He said that the negative comments only give him more motivation to prove his detractors wrong when he starts filming the movie. But he expects to have fun doing the film.
Holland actually got a boost from Director Ron Howard of “In the Heart of the Sea,” which the British young actor is also part of. In a recent interview, Howard said that he is confident that Holland will deliver a crowd-pleasing performance as Spider-Man.
The critically-acclaimed director said that Tom has the best qualities because he is energetic, charismatic and he has an impressive work ethic. He added that Holland has a great combination of physical ability and his willingness to throw himself into situations and still be connected to a character in ways that ring true, details Variety.
A different take on Spider-Man
There have been two Spider-Man movie series in nearly two decades, both produced by Sony Pictures. The first one was the “Spider-Man” franchise that starred Tobey Maguire while the second film series is “The Amazing Spider-Man” featuring Andrew Garfield.
Both series showed how Peter Parker got his powers when he was bitten by a spider, although the spider in “The Amazing Spider-Man” is a little more powerful compared to the one in “Spider-Man” because it came from a lab experiment.
As nearly everyone knows, Marvel Studios has acquired the rights to Spider-Man from Sony Pictures when the two companies forged an agreement in February this year, which officially paved the way for the crossing over of the web-slinging superhero to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Apparently, the “Spider-Man” reboot of Marvel will no longer show how Peter Parker will get his power but proceed straight to the alter ego of the superhero being in high school and has been a web-slinger for about two years already. It appears that when Spider-Man appears in “Captain America: Civil War” next year, Peter Parker would have been donning the Spidey suit for about a year already.
Tom Holland admitted that his take on the character was actually influenced by the two other actors who previously played the role, referring to Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.
He says that it is impossible not to draw influence from the two previous actors who played the character before him. In fact, Holland even lauded Tobey and Andrew for their real and rich performances as Spider-Man.
