Tom Holland’s cameo role as Peter Parker and Spider-Man in “Captain America: Civil War” was more than enough to spark interest on the latest rendition to the wall-climbing superhero as he officially enters the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Since Tobey Maguire’s three-film rendition of Peter Parker / Spider-Man from 2002 to 2007, the character has suffered a big-screen slump. And it is not even because of Andrew Garfield who took on the character in the two film reboots from 2012 to 2014, entitled as “The Amazing Spider-Man” and “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” respectively.
With the right ingredient and a great young actor in Tom Holland, Marvel Studios appears to have succeeded in bringing the needed zest to the franchise.
After his cameo appearance in Marvel’s blockbuster film shown in May this year, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man has effectively reintroduced moviegoers at large to a hero whose films had gone from being event cinema to also-ran status with fans in the last decade, notes Screen Rant.
“Spider-Man: Homecoming” shall formally bring back the web-slinging superhero to the good graces of the masses, which is quite evident with the level of anticipation and excitement that the film is generating this early even though the movie is still to hit cinemas on July 7, 2017.
A fan-made trailer
As a matter of fact, amid the absence of a full trailer for “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” some of the more creative fans have started developing their versions taken from the short footage that was shown during the San Diego ComicCon held in July.
One fan trailer actually compiles and video and audio clips from various previously released movies with the intent of providing a glimpse of what a full trailer of “Spider-Man: Homecoming” might end up looking like.
The trailer also added a subplot featuring popular Spider-Man villain, Kraven the Hunter, as played by actor Gerard Butler from the movie “300.”
The fan trailer also contains Mary Jane Watson, played by Chloe Grace Moretz, as Peter Parker’s usual love interest. There were previous rumors saying that Zendaya shall be playing the role of MJ but it turned out that she will be playing Michelle, a friend of Peter Parker, instead.
Infusing further life to the rebooted franchise
One other thing that is raising the excitement of the people on “Spider-Man: Homecoming” is the confirmed appearance of Tony Stark / Iron Man, to be played by Robert Downey Jr.
The decision to blend universes between Sony and the MCU is a no-brainer for both production companies. The former gets to infuse life into a twice-rebooted franchise that petered out after just two movies the last time around. The latter gets at least partial rights back to one of its most iconic heroes, details the Cheat Sheet.
Iron Man is the box office centerpiece of the MCU, and the “Spider-Man: Homecoming” deal infuses Robert Downey Jr.’s star power directly into Sony’s flagging franchise.
Iron Man’s “Spider-Man: Homecoming” appearance is just one piece of Marvel and Sony’s lucrative partnership, but it’s an important one nonetheless. It shows Marvel’s willingness to give as much as it receives and kicks the door wide open for the rest of the studio’s various heroes in Sony’s Spider-Man universe.
Despite giving up creative control on the movie or future follow-up movies, Sony cannot really argue with the almost across-the-board success of the MCU.
Incidentally, Tom Holland may be just taking baby steps in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the new Peter Parker and Spider-Man in the upcoming reboot of the franchise, but the 19-year-old actor seems to be having a blast filming and enjoying all the action on the set.
