‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Producers Cast Michael Chernus as the Tinkerer

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man has another villain to defeat apart from Michael Keaton’s the Vulture. Michael Chernus has been cast to play Phineas Mason, also known as the Tinkerer.

Fans will know him from his roles in “Captain Phillips” and as Piper’s brother Cal in “Orange is the New Black.” He will soon be starring in the Netflix film “The Most Hated Woman in America” alongside Peter Fonda and Melissa Leo.

Deadline reports that Chernus’ character will act alongside another villain played by Michael Keaton. Speculations say that the Tinkerer will be the assistant of Keaton’s character.

Based on the comic books, the villain appeared in the same issue where the Vulture made his debut.  He possesses a superhuman gift of engineering as he is able to invent sophisticated gadgets from nothing more than spare parts.

Although the Tinkerer did not leave a huge mark as much as the winged villain does, it is no doubt that the two will be working together to wreak havoc.

Details regarding the Tinkerer is still scarce but future teasers and trailers are expected to give fans a glimpse of how he will make Spider-Man’s life difficult.

“Spider-Man: Homecoming” is the second reboot of the web-slinging superhero. Tobey Maguire portrayed Peter Parker and his alter-ego from 2002 until 2007 spawning three films.

Andrew Garfield then took over the role in “The Amazing Spider-Man” and its sequel from 2012 to 2014.

The upcoming film will be the first stand-alone Spidey movie from Marvel Studios, following a co-production deal with Sony Pictures. It is the 16th installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The film’s title was revealed last April while principal photography began in June. Production is now in full swing with Robert Downey Jr. confirmed to make a cameo as Iron Man.

Photos from the set have been surfacing online lately. Holland was recently spotted donning the Spidey suit and another photo shows Holland and Zendaya filming.

The film will pick up following the events of “Captain America: Civil War” where Spider-Man made a cameo. Parker tries to balance his life as an ordinary high school student in Queens while fighting crime as his web-slinging alter ego.

Along with Holland, Keaton, and Chernus, the film stars Marisa Tomei, Zendaya, Donald Glover, Bookem Woodbine, Tony Revolori, and Tyne Daly. The film is set to hit theaters on July 7, 2017, in 3D, IMAX, and IMAX 3D.

During the San Diego ComicCon, some of the cast were present to promote the film. They also shared an exclusive teaser which confirmed that the main bad guy will be the Vulture.

The 64-year-old actor was already cast after Holland was confirmed to play the titular role. He then backed out of the project but re-entered again.

A concept art photo of Spider-Man and Vulture were also revealed at last month’s event. Film director Jon Watts opened up about the film saying that it will center on Peter’s life as a teenager.

He says that a lot of superhero films has dealt with a lot of origin stories, but this time fans will get to see Peter as a 15-year-old boy juggling his life, his studies, and his alter-ego.

The director adds that the film will take elements from the previous Spidey films. Holland says that he will also pay homage to the portrayals of Maguire and Garfield but says that he will deliver something more.

Watts says that Holland’s cameo in “Captain America: Civil War” already serves as a great teaser of what’s to come for his solo film. He says that the film will also pave the way for Spider-Man’s full entry into the world of the Avengers.
