Tom Holland as Spider-Man made a cameo appearance in “Captain America: Civil War” and most of the scenes where he was in were comical and light-hearted even during the fight scenes between and among the Avengers. Holland’s version of the web-slinging superhero is a talker and he is funny in a lot of ways.
His cameo in “Captain America: Civil War” ultimately sets the stage for his stand-alone film set to be shown on July 7, 2017, with the official title of “Spider-Man: Homecoming.”
Before the showing of “Captain America: Civil War,” only three actors were confirmed for “Spider-Man: Homecoming” including Holland, Marisa Tomei, who shall play the role of Aunt May and who also happened to have a cameo in the same movie, and Zendaya, who shall play the role of Michelle. Then there is also the confirmation of Tony Revolori as Manuel.
Shortly thereafter, it was also confirmed that Robert Downey Jr. shall be showing up in “Spider-Man: Homecoming” since Tony Stark was actually the one who convinced Peter Parker to join them in battling the other Avengers.
There were reports last month that Michael Keaton, the actor who once played Batman, was also being considered for a role in the Spider-Man stand-alone film. It was only this month when the veteran actor reportedly agreed to join the collaborative film of Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures. He will be taking on the role of The Vulture, one of the popular supervillains of the Spider-Man franchise.
The Vulture is actually the first real supervillain to battle Spider-Man. He was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko and was first introduced in the Amazing Spider-Man Comics #2 released in 1963, notes Deadline.
The Vulture’s alter ego is aging inventor Adrian Toomes from Staten Island. He had created a flight harness that enhanced his strength and prolonged his life. But he was robbed blind by his embezzling business partner and Toomes has since turned into a life of crime out of bitterness and a desire for revenge.
Getting the attention of the Marvel bosses
“Spider-Man: Homecoming” is to be directed by Jon Watts based on the script by John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein.
Watts’ last film “Cop Car” starring Kevin Bacon, was an indie film hit that helped grab the attention of Marvel bosses on the directing capability of the “Spider-Man: Homecoming” director, notes Joblo.
There have been previous reports that Spider-Man shall have a mind-blowing costume for his stand-alone film so the costume he wore in “Captain America: Civil War,” which was reminiscent of the superhero’s previous get-up is not the thing that the producers have been trumpeting about.
According to rumors, it will be Tony Stark who will give Peter Parker a new suit but that remains to be seen.
From the “Captain America: Civil War” movie, Peter Parker thanked Mr. Stark for giving him a new costume before their fight with the other Avengers because his first home-made costume was a dud by Tony Stark’s standards.
Reports also have it that Tony Stark shall also be supplying Spider-Man the classic Web Wings as seen in the comics which he can deploy as needed.
A collaborative work
Meanwhile, while Sony Pictures appears to be calling the shots in the upcoming “Spider-Man: Homecoming” and shall, in fact, be releasing the film, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige clarified during the press day for “Captain America: Civil War” that both Sony and Marvel are working very much together in the movie.
Feige said that he does not know exactly what the credits will be but “Spider-Man: Homecoming” will be a Sony Pictures production of a Marvel Studios film.
He added that the agreement between Sony and Marvel was that it is very much a Sony Pictures movie. Sony will be producing while Marvel will be the creative producers.
The Marvel Studios boss said that Marvel is the ones hiring the actors, introducing them in the film and then working on the script. He also said that filming of “Spider-Man: Homecoming” will soon begin.
