Sony Xperia Z3 vs. Sony Xperia Z2 vs. OnePlus One: Pitching the Japanese Twins against the Chinese Flagship-Killer!

While Sony Xperia Z2 was the flagship device for Sony a few months ago, the Z3 has now taken its rightful place with very minor improvements over its predecessor. Let us see how these two devices fare against the OnePlus One.

Display:

Both the Sony Xperia Z2 and Z3 come with an IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen with 16M colors. Both of them have the same display resolution at 1080 x 1920 pixels with the same 424ppi pixel density. The display technology used in these devices is essentially same as they support a similar ten-finger multi-touch input. Furthermore, they also have identical shatter-proof glass technology with a tri-luminous display supported by the X-Reality Engine.

Compared to both these devices, the display on the OnePlus One somewhat fades away. Although it has a bigger screen size at 5.5 inches compared to the 5.2 inches in the Z twins, the display does not have any additional features and comes with a lower 401ppi. It comes with a simple Corning Gorilla Glass display compared to the shatter-proof and X-Reality Technology in the Sony devices.

Performance:

Both the Sony Xperia Z2 and the Z3 have similar Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipsets that are based on the quad-core Krait 400 architecture. The Z2 has a lower processing speed of 2.3 GHz compared to the 2.5 in the Z3.  The GPU aspect in both these devices is handled by Adreno 330. The Z2 comes with Android v4.2.2 Kitkat OS version compared to the v4.4.4 in the Z3. A planned upgrade to v5.0 has been announced for both these devices in the near future.

In comparison to these specs, the OnePlus One has the same processor as seen in the Z3, which is a tad bit faster than the one in the Z2. It comes with the same Adreno 330 GPU unit as well. However, the OnePlus One makes use of a Cyanogen mod for the Android Kitkat platform. It comes with a stock v4.4.2 version that will be upgraded to the Android equivalent v4.4.4 version.

Camera:

The Sony Xperia Z2 and the Z3 have similar cameras with the same 20.7 MP shooter and the ability to record 2160p videos. Either of these devices makes use of the 1/2.3” sensor size with Geo-tagging, HDR and Touch-to-Focus features among others. The OnePlus One, on the other hand, makes use of a lower 13 MP shooter with a Dual-LED flash. The OnePlus One has a better secondary camera at 5 megapixels compared to 2.2 in both the Sony devices.

Storage and Memory:

The Sony Xperia Z2 and the Z3 come with 16 GB Internal storage capacity with an additional 32 GB variant for the Z3. Both these devices are expandable up to 128 GB using a micro SD card. Both the devices run on similar 3GB RAM modules. The OnePlus One has no expandable card slot and comes with 16GB/64GB variants only while having a 3 GB RAM like the Sony devices.

If you plan on getting a device with an expandable storage capacity and a superior camera, then you should go for Sony. However, if 16/64GB internal storage is sufficient for you along with a lower 13 MP camera, then OnePlus One is the device to go for, considering you are happy with a Chinese manufacturer.
