While it’s not rare for a TV show to end its season with a major cliffhanger, the producers of “The Affair” really pushed that concept to its limits with the ending of the show’s first season. Numerous questions were left unanswered, and online discussions about the next season have been incredibly active ever since the last episode aired. And now, with the approach of season 2, the show’s creator has explained some of the details surrounding the way season 1 ended, while also giving some hints about the next season.
His answer wasn’t that clear, although it did shed some light on how the show’s producers have been handling the script. According to him, viewers need to look at the final scene from season 1 objectively, freeing themselves of any of their own ideas that they might have about the meaning of the scene. This was in response to a direct question about whether or not the murderer of Scotty will be revealed in season 2.
Sarah Treem further said that she enjoys exploring the element of human interactions in crime cases, not just the criminal acts themselves – another theme which the show is apparently going to dig into with its second season on a deeper level.
It appears that season 2 will be structured a bit like a puzzle, taking viewers on a trip through which they’re given piece after piece of the bigger picture, and are left to put it all together on their own in the end. This is an interesting concept, and it has certainly worked for other shows before, but it’s also a bit of a risky one, as sometimes, if the clues aren’t made clear enough, viewers may start getting frustrated by a perceived lack of development in the plot.
Although, judging by the way the show has been evolving through its first season, its creators obviously know how to maintain the crowd’s interest and feed information to their viewers properly, so there’s good reason to believe that season 2 will be executed the way it should.
There are a few months to go before that happens, as the new season is expected to air sometime in 2015 – although it’s not yet specified when exactly this will happen. The show’s producers have been a bit vague regarding their release plans, although rumors point towards the middle of 2015 as a possible rough release date. Of course, there should be a lot of hype preceding the release, given the way the first season was marketed, so fans will know exactly when their favorite show is coming back at least a few weeks in advance.
