Should Fallout 4 Take Place in Boston, or Explore New Grounds, and How Can the Series Improve

“Fallout 4” might be far away, according to some reports, but its fans are certainly already quite excited about the new game, and speculating wildly about what it could bring to the table. A lot is expected to happen in the new installment to one of gaming’s most iconic franchises, but so far, it seems that even the most basic details like its location haven’t been decided on. While this could indicate a very early stage of development, it also leaves plenty of room for speculations.

One of the most prominent theories among fans – and even some critics – is that the game will take place in Boston. There have been some hints that this might be the case indeed, and it would also make a lot of sense in terms of ambience and history. “Fallout” has traditionally put a strong emphasis on tying its plot to historic events, and Boston could be a great opportunity to take this concept even further.

The city also has the right combination of authentic American and modern styles, and can make the perfect setting for a game with the characteristic style of “Fallout”. Last but not least, it’s currently an active scene for the research of various advanced robots, something which could be very easily tied in with the story of “Fallout 4” for fantastic results.

Other than getting the location right, what else can the new installment do to make the franchise even better though? There has been a lot of talk in this regard, but most fans seem to agree that the V.A.T.S. system could use some improvement at this point, if the game is to be made more intuitive. At the same time, some want to see a stronger focus on exploration, as well as more expansive side quests and alternative possibilities for approaching the storyline.

Online play has also been getting thrown around as an idea from time to time, but some of the game’s fans seem to be skeptical of the idea, calling it incompatible with the native style of “Fallout”. The game relies heavily on isolation and solitude, something which obviously can’t get represented too well in the context of a multiplayer experience, although Bethesda have proven before that they know how to pull off some seemingly impossible tasks, especially when it comes to gameplay changes, so it’s possible that they might surprise their fans in this way. One way or another, “Fallout 4” has the potential to be a revolution in gaming, not just in its own genre but in general – and Bethesda should do their best to reap this potential and realize it to its fullest.
