Sherlock Season 4 to Feature the Return of Self-Proclaimed Consulting Criminal and Holmes’ Arch Nemesis Jim Moriarty, More Details

Fans of the British fiction crime drama TV series “Sherlock” on BBC One should be happy to know that filming for the fourth season of the popular show has already begun, which means that it is on course to its early next year release date.

After completing his filming assignment to the Marvel movie “Doctor Strange,” British actor Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Detective Sherlock Holmes, and Martin Freeman, who plays Dr. John Watson, have returned to 22B Baker Street for the production of the TV series’ fourth season.

In addition to the two main protagonists of “Sherlock,” there are now reports going around that Jim Moriarty, the self-proclaimed consulting criminal and arch nemesis of Sherlock Holmes, shall also be returning in the first episode of the fourth season of the TV series.

Jim Moriarty is being played in the series by Andrew Scott and his return to the series has become imminent when his familiar mug flashed on all the screens in London with a one-liner that asks ‘Miss me?’

Fans of the TV series very well know that Moriarty already met his tragic end in Season 2 after he jumped off the roof of St. Barts Hospital following Sherlock, who apparently just faked his death. It seems that Moriarty also faked his demise, reports Movie News Guide.

All roads lead back to Baker Street

Series co-creators Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat confirmed that “Sherlock” series 4 has already begun filming. In an interview with BBC, they stated that whatever else they do or wherever they go, all roads lead back to Baker Street.

The two said that it always feels like a homecoming for them. Just like in the previous seasons of “Sherlock,” the next season shall feature ghosts of the past from the lives of Holmes and Watson which will be bringing adventures, romance, and terror in their wake.

It is likely that Moriarty is one of those ghosts of the past that will cause problems with the consulting detective and his blogger best friend.

But Moffat claims that Moriarty is already dead. He said in a recent interview that Sherlock and Moriarty did not fake suicide at each other. They would feel stupid if they bumped into each other eventually after committing fake suicides.

A new teaser for ‘Sherlock’ Season 4

Meanwhile, Mark Gatiss also posted a teaser for “Sherlock” Season 4 featuring a new image taken in the set that showed the back view of Sherlock Holmes watching the street through the window of his 221B Baker Street apartment, reports the Christian Today.

Although the teaser did not reveal much about the plot of the upcoming season of “Sherlock,” BBC One promised to offer a lot of new surprises and unexpected cases in Season 4.

Gatiss also talked about “The Abominable Bride” Christmas special and that Season 4 will be heavier compared to the previous season. He recalled that the first two episodes of Season 3 were light-hearted because they knew that they were going to shoot Magnusson, and they wanted to make it the best times for the three of them as a new team.

There are also reports going around that British actor Tom Hiddleston will take on the role of the third Holmes brother in Season 4 of “Sherlock” which means that he will be a sibling to Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock and older brother Mycroft, played by Mark Gatiss himself.

Sherlock Season 4

Hiddleston shall reportedly play Sherrinford, according to both Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat.

However, the showrunners expressed apprehension on whether they could get Hiddleston to commit to “Sherlock” since he is such a very busy actor these days. The actor is reportedly doing two movies including “The Night Manager,” and “Kong: Skull Island.” There are even reports that he is vying to become the next James Bond with the decision of Daniel Craig to give up the role after “Spectre” shown in November last year.
