The fourth season of the British crime drama TV series “Sherlock” shall be returning to BBC One on January 1, 2017, exactly three years from its Season 3 airing.
The TV series could not have returned to the small screen at an opportune time since Benedict Cumberbatch, the actor who plays Sherlock Holmes in the TV series, is now enjoying immense global popularity following his recent take on the Marvel superhero “Doctor Strange,” which is also a blockbuster hit as expected.
For sure, many of his Marvel fans would like to catch him again taking on the role of the famous detective of Scotland Yard.
A teaser trailer of “Sherlock” Season 4 has recently been released by BBC One and it hinted of imminent threat to everyone within Sherlock Holmes’ inner circle, reports the University Herald.
The 15-second teaser of “Sherlock” Season 4 is actually nothing but scattered pieces of clues that bring curiosity to the next level among fans of the popular British TV series.
An enemy more dangerous than Moriarty
While previous teases indicated that Jim Moriarty, played by Andrew Scott, shall be back in the upcoming fourth season of “Sherlock,” recent spoilers seem to suggest that Sherlock Holmes would have a new enemy who is going to be more dangerous than Moriarty.
The enemy is said to be Culverton Smith, who shall bring his evil plans for Sherlock including his attempt to poison the detective.
But Moriarty is going to be back in Season 4 of “Sherlock.” It can be recalled that Sherlock did not actually defeat Moriarty in their previous encounter so he would surely be back with a vengeance.
There are reports saying that Moriarty might be back in Season 4 but is going to be worse than before. In fact, there are also speculations stating that he could be the guy behind Smith in making the devious preparation against Sherlock Holmes.
Clues being dropped on a regular basis
Instead of peppering viewers of “Sherlock” with trailers of what they should expect once Season 4 airs, BBC One has been dropping clues instead on a regular basis.
On November 30, the British TV network revealed an animated image that owes something of a debt to the Season 3 poster of “Mad Men.”
Titled as the “Rising Tide,” the teaser shows Benedict Cumberbatch’s eponymous high-functioning sociopath and Martin Freeman’s Dr. John Watson looking pensive inside 221B Baker Street as water listlessly floods the flat, details Deadline.
The week before that, an image was also released showing Sherlock staring quizzically at Watson’s new baby and also included the first look at new bad guy Toby Jones, who shall be playing Culverton Smith.
Culverton Smith is a character from Arthur Conan Doyle’s short story, “The Adventures of the Dying Detective.”
BBC made the announcement about “Sherlock” Season 4 during the final night of the Great British Bake Off 2016. After Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc announced the winner, BBC aired a teaser trailer of “Sherlock” Season 4.
While most of the footage in the teaser trailer has already been seen as early as during the San Diego ComicCon held in July, what excited the viewers and fans is the announcement that “Sherlock” Season 4 already has a January 1, 2017 air date.
Hours before the airing of the trailer at the Great British Bake Off 2016, BBC has already shared it on Twitter, alongside an image of Sherlock’s violin. The network also revealed that the premiere episode shall be titled “The Six Thatchers.”
Just like its first three seasons, “Sherlock” Season 4 shall only feature three episodes. After “The Six Thatchers,” the second episode is officially titled “The Lying Detective.” The title of the third and final episode for Season 4 has yet to be announced as of this time.
