Season 8 of “The Big Bang Theory” ended on a very dramatic note, as Sheldon and Amy broke up – or rather, Amy broke up with Sheldon, leaving him visibly disappointed and upset. And of course, he wasn’t the only one upset from this development, as the entire fan base of the series jumped to the Internet to discuss what they had just seen, and the implications this could have for season 9.
It’s not yet known what the new season will bring, but one thing is starting to become clear – it could be focused on the topic of love to a large extent. There have been rumors that a lot of the season is going to feature Sheldon trying to win Amy back, but we don’t know how many episodes this story arc is going to span over, or whether or not this is true in the first place.
For what it’s worth, the way Amy worded the breakup didn’t sound like it was permanent, and she seemed to want more space to figure out her current situation more than anything else. Still, in a relationship like that, it’s hard to say if there is a chance for the two to get back or if their relationship is doomed once one person has already checked out from it emotionally.
They have been dating for years at this point, and Amy apparently felt that there was no more growth between them, and she wanted to experience something new in order to develop herself further. She added that it’s a real challenge to be a girlfriend to Sheldon, both emotionally as well as physically. In the end, she stated that she just wanted to reevaluate her situation, but many fans seemed to take that as a hint that the relationship isn’t coming back.
Things were made even sadder by the revelation that Sheldon was actually planning to propose to Amy, when he pulled out an engagement ring during a monologue he was having with himself over the situation (or rather, talking to a Gollum figurine that was sitting on his desk).
Steve Molaro has suggested that Sheldon will put some effort into trying to win Amy back, but he didn’t clarify how exactly this is going to go down. He reinforced the notion that Sheldon is very fond of Amy, so we might see him going to some ridiculous lengths to get another chance. But in the end, the romantic aspect of this show is what has been drawing so many fans to it to a large extent.

The writers should put Sheldon and Penny together. All this brother/sister thing is a hint of how much onscreen chemistry these actors have ALREADY before they even begin. The other couples, particularly Sheldon and Amy seem really forced. Sheldon is an annoying jerk sure, but he’s way out of Amy’s league. Plus I just don’t believe a girl like Penny would stay with Leonard.
