“Scorpion”, the popular action drama by CBS, is coming back for a second season on September 21, and the show will be adding at least one new character in a recurring role, played by Alana de la Garca. Meanwhile, we’ll also see Cabe coming back to the team, so the show will be picking up its pace for season 2.
Alana de la Garca will play the role of the new Head of Homeland Security, who has been described as “smart, tough and driven” by Deadline, where the news first became public. Needless to say, any news of a new character are always welcome by fans of this show, and this announcement is already being discussed actively. It remains to be seen if the character will live up to the expectations that fans have, but the plot can always be tweaked until it’s good enough in this regard if it doesn’t work in the beginning.
De la Garca’s character will have the responsibility of making sure that the Scorpion team end up successful in all of their operations, but it’s not yet clear if she’s driven by a desire to see them succeed, or if she also has some ulterior motives that aren’t being shown in the beginning.
She’s replacing the previous Director of Homeland Security, Director Merrick, who transferred Cabe to Pomona airport and gave him a desk job. At the end of the first season, Cabe quit his job. However, we might see the character coming back to the team now that the landscape has changed. According to the report about the new season, we’ll see Cabe working as a technical advisor in Hollywood until Garza, the new director, requests his return to the team.
It should come as no surprise that he ends up immediately accepting the proposal, and the team is back in full swing. In addition, another report about the show claimed that the finale for season 1 was the most watched show during its respective week, with a high rating of 10.42 million viewers.
The show has been enjoying a pretty strong reception so far, despite the fact that it started out on a somewhat bad note. It drew some criticism for the exaggerated nature of its storytelling, even though it’s supposedly based on true events. It follows the story of Walter O’ Brien, a real-life hacker, who uses his skills along with a few other geniuses in order to defeat threats to society.
In the main roles, we have Elyes Gabel, Katherine McPhee, Eddie Kaye Thomas and Ari Stidham, accompanied by Jadyn Wong and Riley B. Smith. O’ Brien himself is producing the show, along with Alex Kurtzman and a few others. However, Walter O’ Brien is apparently the main creative force behind this production, deciding the direction of its style and plot development.
There might be some more major changes coming to the show’s plot structure in season 2, as it’s been rumored that we’re going to see more complex story arcs that span over multiple episodes, instead of the regular weekly problem that the characters are dealing with now.
The producers of the show apparently want to explore the idea of multiple overlapping story arcs, and they want to be able to look at an idea for the season and then use it to plan things out more carefully compared to season 1. According to the producers themselves, the first season was planned in a bit of an “on-the-go” way, and they are trying to avoid that for the new one.
