Smartwatches have been around as a general concept for a while already, but the various companies in this market are still experimenting wildly with different innovations in this field, and new technology is still being discovered that advances the state of wearable gadgets even further. In the beginning, a smartwatch was more of a watch with a few extra features, such as a calendar and perhaps an address book. Now, with the integration of SIM technology into modern devices like the Samsung Gear S, users practically have a smartphone that they can wear on their wrists. Which, for some people, brings up the question “do we even need phones anymore?”
The Samsung Gear S isn’t out yet, and in fact, it’s not known exactly when the device will hit the market (although there certainly isn’t a shortage of rumors about that). However, the small gadget has still managed to generate quite a lot of hype around itself, and a lot of people are eagerly waiting for Samsung to say when they can get their hands on it. The watch will feature a 2” display with a modest 360×480 resolution, although from what’s been shown in various previews, this is more than enough to show the important details of the interface at a good size.
Users will be able to make use of various health and fitness features built right into the watch, and the S Health app will give detailed information about their current state. It’s interesting to note that the Samsung Gear S is reportedly capable of tracking sleep patterns and recommending changes that can benefit the user, with regards to their current overall health status. Of course, this requires that the watch be worn at all times.
One thing about the Samsung Gear S that has drawn a lot of criticism to the device, is the fact that a lot of its features will be unusable without owning a Galaxy phone or tablet. This includes apps like the calendar, music player, even navigation and news – which, according to some critics, makes the Samsung Gear S more of an expensive add-on for Galaxy handhelds than an actual standalone smartwatch that’s useful on its own.
Still, the diverse feature package that the Samsung Gear S introduces to the smartwatch market is not to be passed on for those who already own a Galaxy device. And, on the other hand, users who’re looking to replace their smartphone, may want to consider the options offered by Samsung in this field. The company has recently been moving in quite a good direction, and helping spread the presence of Android on the market even further with some quite attractive offers.
