Samsung have been moving forward quite well in the Android market, and just recently they brought the newest Galaxy S7 to the market. The company has one of the most popular lines of Android phones in the world, and they are constantly trying to add extra polish to the devices and make them attractive to an even wider range of customers. And one thing that Samsung do very well, according to their users, is take feedback and incorporate it in sensible ways.
However, older entries in their line-up still should not be forgotten, such as the Galaxy S5, which despite its age can still work quite nicely for certain purposes, and is not to be overlooked by buyers conscious about their budget.
It’s not just about the price either – for example, despite being slightly larger than the newest S7, the S5 is actually a bit lighter than its successor and can be a more compact choice for those who don’t like bulky devices in their pockets. Of course, the extra size is not such an advantage when put in the context of the device’s pixel density, but it’s still a nice feature for those who like to have a clearer view of their screen.
Plus, the 432 ppi density of the original S5 is not that bad on its own either, and it definitely holds up nicely even today. Of course, it’s not as impressive as the 577 ppi on the S7, but it should still be more than enough for those who need a moderately good screen.
The performance of the device is one of the factors that are obviously going to be compromised when going back in the line, and this should be expected by anyone choosing to invest in the S5 over the S7. Still, the specifications that the S5 brought to the table were pretty impressive on their own, and the device is not a budget phone by any means. After all, it was the company’s flagship in its respective year, and its features are still relevant today to some extent.
On the other hand, those looking for a more durable phone might want to spend the extra cash on the Galaxy S7 if they can afford it. Samsung have reportedly been putting a lot of effort in this aspect of the device lately, and the newest phone comes with extra water resistance, a better screen and various other features that make its durability significantly better than that of previous phones in the line. Of course this is a smartphone and therefore not a device we would expect to put under rigorous use, but it’s still good to know that one can go on a camping trip without having to worry about their device dying after a drop in a puddle or something along those line. While the S5 can still holds its own ground more or less fine, its successor is definitely a better overall choice.
With all that in mind, it’s good to see that the company’s devices aren’t losing their relevance as time goes by, and they still have a respectable position on the market against other Android phones. This is something that other companies seem to be getting wrong to some extent – we frequently see new releases making older phones obsolete in one way or another, and when this is coupled with an aggressive pricing scheme that doesn’t give many discounts on older phones, this could obviously lead to some trouble.
