When it was officially launched in February 2011 at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) that year, the Samsung Galaxy S II, also known as the Samsung Galaxy S2, ushered one of the thinnest smartphone profiles at that time and eventually set the trend for other smartphones beginning that year.
The Samsung Galaxy S2 came at the heels of the groundbreaking Samsung Galaxy S series which the Korean tech giant continues to hold on to up to this day.
The key feature of the smartphone, which was class-leading upon its launch, was its 4.3-inch WVGA Super AMOLED Plus display, notes The Verge.
The phone officially came out of the retail markets in May 2011 with the Android. 2.3 Gingerbread on it. The Samsung Galaxy S2 was shipped to more than 140 vendors in 120 countries and Samsung announced at that time that it had received pre-orders of three million units of the smartphone globally, making it a retail hit even before it got into the markets.
System upgrade
Less than a year after its official release to the retail markets, Samsung made a system update to the Samsung Galaxy S2 and from Android 2.3 Gingerbread, it updated to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.
Some three months later, with the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S3 in May 2012, another system update came to the Samsung Galaxy S2 as it levelled up to Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.
There has been no official system update to the Samsung Galaxy S2 but the creative developers, at some point in time came up with custom ROM upgrades to the handset from Android 4.4 KitKat all the way to Android 5.0.2 Lollipop.
It came out later that it was actually Samsung who shipped free Galaxy S2 units to several developers of custom Android distribution like the popular CyanogenMod, with the obvious intention of having the smartphone ported to CyanogenMod 7 and get free system upgrade in the process.
Beyond that, the four-year-old smartphone can no longer take any system upgrade as its resources are already growing thin considering the size of the latest updates to Google’s mobile operating system.
This means that even if Samsung is now busy rolling out on its smartphones and tablets the Android 5.1 Lollipop and the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, the Samsung Galaxy S2 would have no part on it whatsoever.
Trend-setter
The Samsung Galaxy S2 is a redesigned and almost a complete makeover of its predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy S. It is a touch-screen, slate-format Android handset with additional software features and expanded hardware.
The smartphone was a trend-setter for Samsung because it was one of the slimmest handsets at the time of its launch and is only 8.49-millimeter thick. Including the two small bulges on it, the overall thickness of the smartphone is only 9.91 millimeters.
