Samsung Galaxy Alpha vs. HTC One M8 vs. OnePlus One: The Flagships Face the Underdog

Flagship smartphones nowadays do not hold the exclusive rights to offer top end features as was customary till a few years ago. Hence, it is getting increasingly difficult for users to decide what to buy. The contenders that we have today are the latest in the market. Hence, the users should get a fairly decent idea of how they compare when pitched against each other.

Samsung Galaxy Alpha:

We start with the alpha smartphone in class, the Samsung Galaxy Alpha. This smartphone has a reputation for being the priciest of the lot. However, is it worth the dough? Samsung is known to compete with Apple in the class. Hence, they price their flagship devices excruciatingly high. The Alpha is no exception.

This device boasts of a 4.7-inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen featuring 16 M color definition, 312 ppi density and 720 x 1,280 pixel resolution. It weighs an impressive 115 grams and measures 132.4 x 65.5 x 6.7 mm.

The Alpha is available in a single variant of 32 GB built-in memory along with 2 GB of RAM. It does not feature external expansion. The 12 MP primary camera is a revelation while the 2.1 MP secondary camera is decent, if not impressive.

The smartphone runs on Android v4.4 KitKat and is upgradable to v5.0 Lollipop. It draws power from a 1.8 GHz Quad-core Cortex A15 CPU and Mali-T628 GPU. It further features a 1,860 mAh Li-Ion battery.

HTC One M8:

The HTC One M8 is the current generation flagship, even though its successor is on the cards. The device features a 5-inch Super LCD 3 display sporting 1,080 x 1,920 pixel resolution, 16 M color definition along with 441 pixel density and weighs 160 grams while measuring 146.4 x 70.6 x 9.4 grams.

The device is available in 16/32 GB of built-in storage and is expandable up to 128 GB via a MicroSD card. It runs on Android v4.4.2 KitKat and draws power from a 2.3 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor with Adreno 330 GPU and Krait 400 CPU. It further features a non-removable 2,600 Li-Po battery.

OnePlus One:

The OnePlus One is the clear underdog here in terms of brand reputation, although, the device is no less than the rivaling products. It features a 5.5-inch LTPS LCD display with 16 M color definition and 1,080 x 1,920 pixel resolution and 401 ppi density. The device weighs 162 grams and measures 152.9 x 75.9 x 8.9 mm. It is available in 16 and 64 GB variants and is non-expandable.

The OnePlus One runs on Android v4.4.2 KitKat and is upgradable to v4.4.4 KitKat and v5.0 Lollipop. It draws power from a 2.5 GHz Krait 400 CPU, Snapdragon 801 chipset and Adreno 330 GPU. It is powered by a non-removable 3,100 mAh Li-Po battery.
