Right off the bat on its premiere episode for Season 6, the Canadian police drama TV series “Rookie Blue” has given its throngs of TV fans and followers a major plot to chew on.
Andy McNally, played by actress Missy Peregrym, was thrown into a personal dilemma when her boyfriend Detective Sam Swarek, played by Ben Bass, admitted to her that he was fathering a child by his ex-girlfriend Marlo Cruz, portrayed by Rachael Ancheril.
Perhaps it would have been easy if the three of them were not working together in the same police force but the plot was really a quiz of the mind and the heart.
So when the second episode titled “Perfect Family” aired and showed that Andy still accepted Sam and his upcoming baby with Marlo, a good number of the TV series’ fans heaved a sigh of relief knowing that the two characters would stay romantically linked.
Tough decision
While Andy was tempted to walk away from the situation at first, just like any normal person would, TV Fanatics believe that it was meant to give space to Sam and allow him to choose which life or path he would choose.
Apparently, when he decided that he wanted to be with Andy despite his predicament, Andy decided to take him in amid the difficult situation. It was actually a tough decision on her part that had it happened in real life, nobody would be able to come up with an instant answer or solution to it.
Eventually, Andy assured Sam that she loved him and though she longed for a perfect family for herself in the future, she has come to accept that there is no such thing given her background. While she admits that it is going to be tough the rest of the way for her, Andy assured Sam that that there would not be a day when his child by Marlo would not feel wanted or loved by her, details Christian Today.
There were also talks among fans of the series whether Marlo was right in telling Sam that he is fathering a baby with her. At first, Marlo wanted to keep it a secret to Sam since she does not want to disrupt his life and his relationship with Andy anymore. While it would have been a good move as far as TV viewers are concerned, in real life, it would have been foolhardy to do so.
A decent man has to know the truth if he is fathering a child and it seems that it was the thread that was followed by the creators of “Rookie Blue” not only because it was the right thing to do, but also to give the fans plenty of chew on as far as plot is concerned. It seems like they succeeded in doing so as the episode has been the focal point of discussions and stories on the internet more than a week after it was aired. And nearly everybody is still chewing on the issue at this time.
Complicated plot
The plot is quite complicated and has all the shades of a soap opera written all over it that actress Missy Peregrym is torn whenever she thinks of how she would deal with a similar situation in real life.
Showrunner Tassie Cameron also disclosed how the actress reacted when she was made privy to the particularly plot of Season 6. The executive producer recalled Missy saying that it was a terrible situation and that she doesn’t know what she would do, which is what Cameron likes about Missy because she is very emotional, sensitive, and really connects with her character Andy.
Cameron said that Missy really brought a lot of confusion and pain to Andy’s dilemma because dealing with the issue is really a huge struggle for her character as well as in real-life.
