The Roku line of set-top boxes has been quite successful so far, with the latest release getting plenty of good reviews and a lot of attention from the media. It should therefore come as no surprise that the Roku 4 is expected with a lot of eager anticipation, and many people apparently want to get their hands on it.
And while we don’t know for sure when the device will go live, recent reports about a price drop for the Roku 3 could be a good indication that we’ll see the announcement soon enough. Usually, companies make these price reductions after releasing a new device, not before, so that would be a strange move, but we don’t know what they might have planned. Currently, the Roku 3 can be bought for around $75, a 25% reduction from its original price.
It’s not even like the Roku 3 was expensive to begin with, as it was among the more affordable solutions on the market, especially for its specifications. However, its 1080p support might not be enough anymore today, as 4K is starting to become more and more prominent. With the Roku 4, we should see a response to that trend as well, as the new device should support the higher definition format.
Other than the resolution, we don’t know much about the new Roku’s specifications – and even the resolution is still a rumor that we haven’t been able to confirm. We’ve heard that the new Roku 4 will feature more RAM and a faster processor, as well as a more advanced remote control with extra features and direct access to different special services.
There have also been rumors that the interface of the new device will be significantly revised in response to community requests for faster and more convenient navigation. There are definitely some details about the interface of the Roku that can be tweaked a little more, and the company should put a little extra effort into the Roku’s usability. It’s not that the interface is actually bad in any way, but streamlining it a little bit could have amazing results for the overall level of intuitiveness of the Roku.
Are we going to see the big announcement soon? There aren’t any serious rumors claiming that, but the recent price reduction of the Roku 3 was definitely suspicious and it’s something to keep an eye on. If it really was in anticipation of the new device though, then it shouldn’t be long before the Roku 4 hits the market. Or in the least, before we see some official news about the device in preparation of its actual launch – even revealing the official specifications would be exciting to fans right now.
