Many “Star Wars” fans have been on edge lately due to the release of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”. It wasn’t quite clear how the production would be handled and how it would relate to the main installments in the franchise, and now that it’s out and we’ve seen some opinions posted online, it looks like the film has been a massive success.
In fact, it apparently even managed to attract the attention of old-school “Star Wars” fans, the exact audience that was most worrying in the whole picture. It’s one thing if it managed to please general filmgoers, but those who’ve been following “Star Wars” for a longer time are a much tougher nut to crack, as we’ve seen in the past.
The film was received so positively that some critics are even claiming that it should have been done sooner, and that the idea had an obvious, huge merit that should have been realized by the owners of the brand.
Perhaps it was a good thing after all that the franchise got transferred over to Disney, as they seem to be doing some interesting things with it. Whether or not they will retain that status quo in the future is hard to tell, but the studio definitely does seem to care a lot about “Star Wars” and its fans, and they aren’t taking their job lightly.
It makes sense that they would do that too, as “Star Wars” is practically a money press at this point. There were some skeptical voices recently, claiming that there is no point in continuing a series that’s been running for so long as it can only lead to disappointment among original fans, but that was clearly wrong.
“Rogue One” has been quite profitable so far, apart from getting recognized by fans and critics, and it looks like it’s shaping up to be one of Disney’s more successful releases for this year. On the other hand, some critics have pointed out that the film didn’t actually earn as much money as they expected, but reports about its profitability will keep coming out for some time, so it’s probably too early for a final verdict.
It’s not a flop in any case, but it may take a while for the producers to fully realize the huge potential of the brand name with this particular installment. We’ll have to wait and see how they handle the post-release marketing and whether there will be a push to bring the film to an even wider audience in the coming weeks/months. As we’ve seen in the world of cinema in the last few years, the initial launch is not the only opportunity to get some recognition for the film.
Last but not least, there are also some more critical voices out there, as it looks like not everyone was completely pleased with what “Rogue One” had to offer. Some fans were actually disappointed with the film, but that can be expected when it comes to something as major as this.
There will always be skeptical voices in the community, and it’s important for Disney to be able to go through the criticisms they receive in an objective manner, properly figuring out what the film’s actual weak points were. It will be a bit of a challenge over the next few months, as people are sure to be saying different things about what they did and didn’t like in “Rogue One”.
