A recent update for “Rise of the Tomb Raider” added PlayStation 4 Pro support to the game, but at the same time, it made it unplayable for many fans. Reports started flooding various gaming forums as players explained that the game now crashes upon launch on their systems. Those who’ve downloaded patch 1.04 are very likely to experience those issues, according to reports.
Users have found a workaround that seems to resolve the problem, at least for now – but it’s not a convenient one, depending on how one likes to play on their console. Disconnecting from the Internet seems to prevent the crash from occurring, so as long as a player is comfortable playing entirely offline and not interacting with their friends, that’s a temporary fix.
On the other hand, those who haven’t downloaded the update yet should definitely postpone it, as it’s pretty much guaranteed that a hotfix is on the way. There is far too much pressure on the studio for them to ignore this issue right now, plus the reputation of the game would be tarnished beyond repair if they let this go on for a little longer.
Other than allowing the game to run on the PS4, the new update also made it possible to play it at a 4K resolution, which should go nicely together with the PS4 support. In addition, the patch notes claim that input latency has been reduced, which is not something many players have been complaining about, but it’s still good to see that the studio is paying attention regardless.
How is the game holding up after so much time has passed since its release? Many people were initially skeptical towards it, claiming that it’s a move in the wrong direction for the franchise. It’s not hard to see where they were coming from – “Tomb Raider” was traditionally a much more arcade-y, lighthearted game with a different style of gameplay.
Moving towards a hardcore survival game was an odd choice, but it actually fits the franchise thematically quite well. Some players have even claimed that the original team behind “Tomb Raider 1” would have probably done the game in a similar way if they had the resources to do so.
While it’s hard to say whether that’s true or not, the important thing is that the final result was a great game that got lots of positive responses from the community. Fans were impressed with how the developers had handled the new tone, and the game set some new trends for the franchise which we hope to see continued.
It’s not actually the first time we got to see Lara Croft through a pair of hardcore eyes, as the previous “Tomb Raider” was actually the one that started this theme. “Rise of the Tomb Raider” expanded on it significantly, and made it clear that this is the new direction for the franchise. And at this point, hardly any of the fans are arguing with this decision either.
However, incidents like the current situation with the crashing update could tarnish the reputation of the series very quickly, and hopefully the developers are going to address the situation as soon as possible. It could also be the case that they don’t actually know what’s causing the crashes yet though, but then they should probably do a rollback in order to at least keep the game playable for everyone until they can get the update to work.
