Season 3 of the adult animated TV series “Rick and Morty” is still more than 15 months away from premiering on Adult Swim, but speculations and rumors about the show are running aplenty on the internet, indicative of how popular and widely-followed it is.
Fans of the TV series had the opportunity to see a “Rick and Morty” Christmas Special when creators Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon, showed a spontaneous episode of “Rick and Morty” live in Cinefamily on December 11 at Los Angeles during the Animation Breakdown 2015 event.
The featured “Rick and Morty” footage was not a past episode from the past two seasons but an improvised one. It was nothing like any episode shown before, nor was it an advance episode of the upcoming Season 3, which was why some actually referred to it as “Rick and Morty” episode 2.5.
Justin Roiland made use of a Cintiq tablet and accompanied it with improvised insanity as well as a live drawing that ensured high energy madness during the event.
Going to the dogs
While either Roiland or Harmon has yet to confirm it, there are reports going around that “Dog World,” an earlier piece but unaired animatic TV series created by Roiland for Cartoon Network back in 2012, will be integrated to Season 3 of “Rick and Morty.”
“Dog World” is the story of Peter Michaels, his brother Edmund, and younger sister Sally, who all got sucked into a wormhole during a camping trip. They ended up in a world populated by talking anamorphic dog people who keep animal-like humans as pets, details Moviepilot.
Interestingly, the voices of Peter Michaels and Edmund, just like the voices of Rick and Morty are done by Roiland himself.
In previous episodes of Season 1 of “Rick and Morty,” Roiland has made reference to “Dog World” when Morty asked Rick on what it is like to have a world inhabited by dogs.
And for that, reports now have it that Season 3 of “Rick and Morty” may see the duo travel to “Dog World” and dealing with them too, notes Venture Capital Post.
While some entities are still reporting that “Rick and Morty” may integrate “Dog World” into Season 3 of the TV series, it should be noted that the iconic theme song of the popular TV series actually originated from the unaired show.
Specific narrative for each episode
Viewers of “Rick and Morty” have not really seen any reference to previous storylines as each episode contains its own specific narrative.
Dan Harmon recently explained that their instinct was not to ruin the show by curling back on their tails too soon.
He explained that there have been a couple of instances where the joyful TV viewer in him said that they should have done another Meeseeks episode, but they have avoided the temptation.
In fact, the only real overarching story during Season 2 of “Rick and Morty” was the Bird Person / Tammy wedding subplot. And they intend to change the episodic format come the third season.
In a recent interview, Harmon said that after re-watching Seasons 1 and 2 of “Rick and Morty,” he expressed that he is now excited about revisiting stuff for Season 3 because he and Justin were so phobic about it during the previous season.
He added that “Rick and Morty” can perhaps fade in on Blips and Chitz because they have already proven that the show is not going to start eating itself, and that will feel even more limitless if they go back to a couple of things that they have previously enjoyed doing.
