On February 26th terrible news hit the web – Rick and Morty are never coming back.
The creators of the series have a really unhealthy sense of humor – as in, the fans are going to go crazy on them, if they make another hurtful joke about the season 3 never arriving.
Rumors spreading like a virus
At first, the season 3 premiere was announced for 2016, and it never happened. It was rescheduled for 2017 but no specific date was chosen, so the fans are in constant state of uncertainty. So, if someone wants to cause chaos, letting a rumor spread would be just the tool for that. And exactly at this point, a viral rumor comes – Rick and Morty season 3 got cancelled!
After 2 years of waiting?
If it came from an unknown source, we really wouldn’t pay any attention to it, but, it came from Justin Roiland, co-creator of Rick and Morty! In reply to a tweet from Freddie Wong who asked him whether his entire timeline is “just people begging for season 3?” Justin wrote “Pretty much. When they find out it’s never coming… yeesh. It’s gonna get gnarly.” Once this nightmarish scenario hit the web, the avalanche started – those who understood the joke were few, and already replying with GIFs, but those who didn’t? Ouch. Within minutes, there were people begging to be told that this is not true, and that season 3 is coming after all.
And, to top it off, there was a tweet from Rick and Morty saying “When the f**k is Fargo season 3 coming out? Feels like we’ve been waiting forever.” – seriously guys? Like Fargo could ever compare to this show.
So the fans went into a freak-out frenzy
It seems that it is not possible to parody extremists without being thought of as one by at least someone. Lately it’s just impossible to make a joke without people taking it literally. Or maybe, just maybe, they are jokingly freaking out about the cancellation joke? Inception style. We wouldn’t ponder on that one for too long.
Now, why would people believe this?
Well, at first, Dan Harmon said in 2016, that it is partially his fault that the writing took so long. “I don’t have a release date for Season 3. It’s not that I know it and I’m not allowed to say it; it’s [Adult Swim’s] domain. What I will tell you is it’s late because of us, it’s late because of me. If Justin were here he’d agree. He and I would go, ‘Yeah, we fucked up,’ and it’s hard to put your finger on how we fucked up. ‘Rick and Morty’ keeps taking longer and longer to write, and I don’t know why.”
Then, in early 2016 one of the creators of Rick and Morty tweeted that season 3 voiceover work had begun. But that was in February, so the fans kept on asking what is going on, and when will this beloved off-the-wall sci-fi comedy come back.
At the end of the second season, during the climactic cliffhanger finale, which aired in October 2015, Mr. Poopybutthole said Rick and Morty season 3 will come back in about a year and a half. Seems the annoying little thing was at least partially right – nothing before March 2017. Although, the time he announced is now, and still Adult Swim is not publishing any official airing date. They only published a new trailer that disappointed many fans.
All we know about the new season, is what Harmon said about the season 2 cliffhanger “I don’t think anybody wants to do a third season that simply spends a whole bunch of episodes dealing with a situation that we created at the end of the second season. So I think that’s a non-spoiler way of saying things should be okay pretty quickly.” Also, we found out there will be 14 episodes – which is more than previous two seasons that had 11 and 10.
This being said, it is safe to claim that Rick and Morty fans don’t have to fret that their favourite show will disappear forever.
We are guessing Justin just got tired of people telling him to go back to work, instead of planning to buy Nintendo Switch. So he decided to make them suffer a bit, relying on the good sense of humor of his fans. Cruel, but still kind of funny. Just, Justin, please don’t do it again, our hearts couldn’t take it!
