It looks like the family members will have much more prominent roles in this season, and it won’t be just about Rick and Morty themselves anymore. Of course, the show did a pretty good job at fleshing out those characters in season 1, but they could always be given a more central role in the plot.
It looks like someone might even try to steal Morty’s spot as the main assistant on Rick’s adventures, and the trailer hinted that it could be his own sister. We don’t know if that was just one of the show’s many jokes or something more serious, but it would certainly add an interesting layer to the story. The rivalry between Morty and his sister was touched upon briefly several times before, but we never got to see it in more detail.
The trailer also shows a scene that could be a reference to “Dota 2” – a couple of body-suit-mechs are fighting in a forest, with one of them resembling Timbersaw from the game somewhat closely. With any other show, this could have been a random coincidence – but the voice actors of “Rick and Morty” recently released their own announcer pack for the game, so it looks like they’re definitely open to making references to it.
Plus, the show has been known for making regular references to pop culture in general, so that part really wouldn’t be surprising. It would certainly be interesting to see an entire episode playing as a game of “Dota” or something along those lines. The show tends to be very friendly to geek culture in general, so it’s a real possibility.
We also got to see the family doing various cool things in the trailer, and it looks like this season will have its fair share of drama and exciting moments. After all, it wouldn’t be “Rick and Morty” if the show doesn’t put its main characters in peril every once in a while.
