The return to television of American comedian, writer, producer, actor, media critic, and television host Stephen Colbert will begin at an episode of Season 2 of the popular American adult animated TV series “Rick and Morty” on Adult Swim.
Apparently, Colbert’s guest appearance on “Rick and Morty” will come before his “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” premieres on the air, details iDigital Times.
Colbert will appear first on the sixth episode of “Rick and Morty” to air on September 6 before his show official debuts on Adult Swim on September 8.
The TV show’s character on “Rick and Morty” will be an intellectual match for Rick, making him unique in the universe of the TV series. Rick will apparently hate everyone including Colbert’s alien for being smart. Rick hates everyone else for their stupidity and it is only Colbert whom will he hate because the guy is smart like him.
According to co-showrunner Justin Roiland, the episode of “Rick and Morty” where Stephen Colbert appears is his favorite for Season 2. He disclosed that Stephen matches up well with Rick and that the TV host really kicked ass and gave 100% to the show.
Roiland added that Colbert was really fun to work with and could not have been a better sport. He also lent a great voice for the character and is as smart as Rick.
The show co-creator said that during the “Needful Things” episode of “Rick and Morty” Season 1 where Alfred Molina was the guest star, Rick clearly had the upper hand the whole time. But with the episode where Colbert served as a guest, he becomes a pretty equal match. Roiland said that fans will surely find it interesting to watch Rick be insecure and shitty about the fact that he knows that Stephen is pretty smart.
Not the typical scientist
What makes “Rick and Morty” an obvious joke is the fact that the character that Rick plays is not the typical brilliant scientist that people were made to believe.
Rick is not a good role model because apart from being callous and drunk most of the time, he exposes poor Morty to a number of horrible situations. In fact, in one episode, Rick actually destroyed planet Earth, details AV Club.
“Rick and Morty” obviously made some good jokes out of it and it continues to get some mileage from the subversions, but the surprise is gone. Viewers are no longer shock when Rick acts indifferent or selfish or obscene and his character is more defined now in the TV series.
But that is a good thing because it only means that Rick is a character and not just a mere collection of twists. Plus, it leads fans to the second joke who is Morty, whose response to most situations are considered moral and good, but more often wrong than not.
Frustrated over leaks
Meanwhile, co-executive producer and writer Dan Harmon expressed his dismay over the recent leak of the show’s first, second and third episodes showing up on torrent sites even before they were aired on Adult Swim.
He said that it’s just frustrating because they would like people to see that the episodes are finished, with the fixed audio and the video all color-corrected.
The first two episodes of Season 2 of “Rick and Morty” already came out before the show’s premiere on July 26. Episode 3 of Season 2 titled “Auto Erotic Assimilation” also came out in torrent sites one day after the premiere of the series.
It is not clear how much content does the culprit or culprits have on the show, but it is almost sure the show producers are looking for ways to plug the seeming loophole in the production.
It would have been typical if “Rick and Morty” co-creators Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland would feel disappointed over the leaks of the first three episodes of the Season 2 of the series.
