“Rick and Morty” has only been on the screen for two seasons, and the show is already one of the most popular productions on television, with a third season lined up as well. It managed to quickly attract a large number of people from its very first episodes, and it’s clear that it can go down in history as one of the most successful TV productions in general. But how did it achieve this status, and what more can we expect in the future?
The show isn’t afraid to take risks, that much is clear. It has managed to cover all sorts of controversial topics from its very first episode, and it usually doesn’t do any clichéd plots. In the few occasions where it looked like it was headed in that direction, there was always an interesting twist that completely turned things around and made fans even more confused/surprised.
And it was just written well in every regard, which is a simple but important factor for any good production to last. Its characters are funny and have multiple dimensions to their personalities, and we’ve seen the writers exploring those different sides of them very thoroughly in the last two seasons, leaving the audience with a well-rounded cast with a lot of potential for interesting adventures in the future.
According to many fans, the decision to let the family in on the secret shared by Rick and Morty was one of the best moves by the writers – by getting everyone involved in the wacky adventures that the two undertake so often, this allows the writers to come up with even funnier storylines that involve the whole family. And even better, each family member has so far shown some aspect of their personality that has shown that they have an actual use on those adventures and they aren’t just dead weight.
Even Jerry has grown a lot, even though his character is still focused on the idea of him being a wimp without much of a personal opinion or stance. At the same time, the writers have done a lot to help viewers sympathize with him better, and it’s clear that they care about the character as much as any other member of their cast.
Then we had some episodes which really put viewers to the test, both with some twisted plots which left everyone confused, as well as with more touching moments that brought the audience to tears. Indeed, season 1 had its dark moments but it wasn’t until season 2 that the show really started to push those ideas and became so deep and borderline depressing that some fans were questioning where the show would end up. Some were even expecting a dark plot twist at the end of season 2, and in the end that’s exactly what we got. It’s clear that things are headed in a bad direction for the family, but how is the next season going to fix things?
And more importantly, when is that season airing? The last episode of season 2 ended with one of the characters saying that season 3 is coming “in like a year and a half or more”, and while some fans saw that as a hint about the release date of the next episodes, others took it as a tongue-in-cheek joke about the production pace of season 2 and the issues that surrounded the show during those times.
