When the third film of the “Resident Evil” movie franchise, titled “Resident Evil: Extinction” was shown in global theaters in 2007, fans and viewers thought that it was going to be the last in the series.
Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on how fans view it, the franchise still spawned two more sequels – “Resident Evil: Afterlife” in 2010 and “Resident Evil: Retribution” in 2012.
“Resident Evil: Afterlife” left a huge cliffhanger in its ending so viewers knew right away that there would be a fifth “Resident Evil” movie. True enough, after two years, it came out on theaters.
The end of “Resident Evil: Retribution” pretty much put everything to a wrap so fans rightfully thought that it was to be the franchise’s last.
It turned out however that Director Paul WS Anderson and his wife Milla Jovovich, the star of the franchise as Alice, have other things in mind and wanted to have one final movie to finally put the series into a wrap again.
The way the upcoming sixth movie of the franchise is titled “Resident Evil: The Final Chapter,” it seems that the producers really intend to make it its last.
“Resident Evil: The Final Chapter” marks the sixth film in the franchise and it promises to live up to its title and end the series for good. Not unless, the producers or the husband and wife tandem of Paul Anderson and Milla Jovovich change their mind again in the near future. But then anything beyond “The Final Chapter” would make fans feel that the franchise will be pushing its luck far too long, notes Cinema Blend.
More gritty and raw
Filming has already started for “Resident Evil: The Final Chapter” in South Africa because it already has a January 2017 playdate.
In a recent interview, Milla Jovovich said that she is already preparing to say goodbye to the action series that she has worked for over the last 15 years. Upon the release of the sixth and final movie next year, the first movie titled “Resident Evil” will mark its 15th year from the time of its release to cinemas.
Jovovich describes the upcoming movie in the long-running zombie action series as much more gritty and raw compared to its predecessor movie that was shown back in 2012.
She added that the action of the upcoming sixth movie is much more in your face and very realistic because there is no slow motion, cites Gamespot.
“Resident Evil: Retribution” made a worldwide box-office haul of $240 million, which was the highest in the franchise, which has earned a total of $915 million globally.
It would really be interesting to find out if “Resident Evil: The Final Chapter” will become the franchise’s biggest blockbuster or fall below the gross of the fifth movie of the series.
A lot of destruction
The first screenshot of “Resident Evil: The Final Chapter” actually put emphasis on the word ‘screen.’
Milla Jovovich recently posted on her Instagram account an image of her character Alice, with her back to the camera. The shot did not give the viewers much to go on but it seems that there is going to be a lot of destruction as shown in the background. Alice, as usual, still looks like the kickass heroin that she is the film.
Incidentally, the “Resident Evil” film franchise is by far the most successful series based on a video game. Critics really find it odd as the typical process is the other way around.
“Resident Evil” is the perfect example of a game being properly translated into film. Some others call it a quality source of cinema but it’s got zombies and guns so gamers and viewers alike would really watch it.
