The development of “Resident Evil 7” will likely take a while, and Capcom haven’t said when they plan to release the game. At this point, it could realistically take years before we see it even being announced – but at least the studio has confirmed their intentions to develop the title. Before that, we’ll see “Resident Evil Revelations 2” by the end of the month, and although the title isn’t being developed with as many resources as the main franchise, it still looks somewhat exciting and a nice entry into the series, especially for those who enjoyed the original older games.
The main idea behind the “Revelations” sub-series was that Capcom saw a growing divide in the game’s community. When the studio changed the development style of the series, they began to alienate some of their original fans. The games were made in a more action-oriented way, and while this attracted plenty of new fans, those who got into the series through the older games were growing a bit frustrated.
Capcom decided to develop “Revelations” as a response to that, making games in this part of the franchise play more closely to the originals. This has been received very positively by fans of the series, and even though the “Revelations” games are made on a lower budget than the main series, the first one still managed to please fans sufficiently.
And even though “Revelations 2” has been eating into the studio’s time quite a bit, they still seem determined to deliver the best possible experience they’re capable of with “Resident Evil 7”, as Okabe himself stated that the game is going to be a very special entry into the series.
The new installment into the main series will be developed by a separate team dedicated to the game, and they’re apparently going to do something that will “blow the minds” of fans, according to Okabe. Of course, without any actual proof of what the game will offer, this could be taken as simple promotional talk, so it’s best to take statements like this with a grain of salt until Capcom actually show something concrete about the upcoming title.
“Resident Evil” has gone through a lot as a franchise, but Capcom are still holding it together nicely. Many of the studio’s fans are confident that whatever they have planned for “Resident Evil 7”, the game is going to be a proper spine-chilling experience. Despite the changes to its gameplay, the franchise has still preserved its core – the sheer horror of facing hordes of zombies with all odds against the player, in beautifully crafted grim environments. Combined with the great atmosphere and writing quality throughout most of the series, if Capcom put all their effort into this title like they’re claiming, it’s going to be a huge hit in the horror genre.
