Renewal for ‘Wayward Pines’ Season 3 Still Up in the Air as Ratings for Season 2 Went Downhill

Fox has been silent about the fate of the mystery science fiction series ‘Wayward Pines’. Reports say that the network is still in doubt whether to renew the show given its dipping ratings last season.

It looks like the producers and writers of the show were also aware of the show’s waning interest as the season 2 proved to be a fitting end to the story and an avenue for the potential season 3 plot.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, series creator and author Blake Crouch said that it was already a surprise that the show was renewed for the season given that it was initially supposed to be a limited series.

The first season of the show covered the entire three books in Crouch’s series. The second season still involved some elements from the trilogy, but some new characters and storylines were also introduced.

Crouch added that the new season could explore the last hours of mankind before the Abbies wipe them out. It will be very interesting how people will react when they know that their inevitable doom is just a few sleepless nights away.

The season 2 finale, showed what season 3 could all be about—the evolution of the Abbies given the open-ended cliffhanger. Crouch said that if they’re lucky enough to have a third season then it’s possible for old characters to return and have new ones as well.

Last season, the Abbies attacked the town which led the human race hanging by a thread. This makes the whole town in danger and left with an uncertain future.

Aside from the seemingly concluded storyline, the show also did not live up to Fox’s expectations. According to TV Series Finale, the show only received an average of 0.73 in the 18-49 demographics.

This rating is way below the average of the series and a massive letdown from the previous season. This means that the recent episodes were not good enough to captivate a large audience.

Reports say that since the first show already covered the novel series where the show was based on, the writers found it hard to find a material that will match the thrill it gave fans during its pilot season.

While the dipping ratings might be a huge factor why Fox hasn’t still decided if season 3 will be greenlit, fans remain optimistic that they will see more of ‘Wayward Pines’.

Fans said that until a cancellation has been confirmed by Fox then that will be the time that they will lose hope for the show to come back on television.

Fans look forward to the evolution of the Abbies and how the human race will fight through this. Viewers look forward to how the destructive creatures plague the town and the plight that the humans will go through because of this.

Fans are also holding to an earlier statement of producer M. Night Shyamalan that the series is a three-season story. The producer said that after the series hits the season 3 mark, then the story will be over.If this is true, then season 3 could still be in the cards and it could also be the show’s final season.
