The fourth season of the American historical drama TV series “Reign” is set to premiere in January next year on The CW and will feature a determined Queen Mary, played by Adelaide Kane, doing the best she can to rule Scotland and her people.
After playing mind games in England with her cousin Queen Elizabeth, and momentarily ruled France with erstwhile husband King Francis, Queen Mary decided to return to her home country in Scotland, which has been like a headless chicken going on a senseless direction.
While her return will be a welcome relief to her people, she is about to face a difficult time in fixing the problems besetting her country, not to mention the proliferation of new enemies that are also determined to bring her to her downfall, reports Game & Guide.
It has been said that Queen Mary will take on an almost different persona as she governs her people. She is reportedly going to be strong as ever and would not bow down especially considering that it is her kingdom in Scotland that is already at stake.
With the death of her first husband Francis, played by Tony Regbo, during Season 3, it is sure that Queen Mary knows that her cousin is out to get her whatever it takes and she will go back to Scotland to heal herself and prepare her revenge on Queen Elizabeth.
An entirely different playing field
In order to rule her people well, Queen Mary will rise to the occasion and be on an entirely different playing field, obviously having learned her lesson in previously ruling France and losing it eventually as well as her husband King Francis, notes the Christian Today.
After Mary left France, the brother of Francis has been declared the new king of France while Catherine de Merci, played by Megan Follows, has been appointed as regent.
Mary must now seek a new ruler to marry in order for her family to forge new alliances and to guarantee that they stay in power.
It is for such reason that she will find solace into marrying a new man to become her second husband come Season 4 in the person of Lord Darnley, to be played by Will Kemp. However, the second marriage shall be short-lived as Lord Darnley shall be killed supposedly by Mary’s third husband, Bothwell, to be played by Adam Croasdell.
Forced into a third marriage?
Reports have it that Queen Mary will marry for the third time but not out of love but because she will be forced into it. She will marry Bothwell. Based on history, Bothwell is one of the people suspected to be responsible for killing Mary’s second husband.
He also reportedly kidnapped the Queen and threatened to kill her if she did not agree to marry him.
However, it remains a mystery if Mary was forced into marriage by Bothwell although many people at that time believed she was. This led to Bothwell fleeing and completely leaving Mary.
It is unknown if this will all be depicted in “Reign” Season 4 as Croasdell and Kemp are only signed for four episodes although going beyond that is up to them.
Incidentally, there were reports saying that Season 4 of “Reign” is going to be a test-case for the show. If it does well in the ratings, there is a strong possibility that The CW would renew it for another season. If it continues to experience the decline in its ratings, then Season 4 is going to be the last for the show.
However, when The CW pushed back the release date of “Reign” from its regular fall premiere to early next year, the notions that the TV series’ fourth season is going to be its last have strengthened all the more.
