The 12th episode of Season 3 of the American historical drama TV series “Reign” aired on The CW on May 3 and it featured Queen Mary of Scots, played by Adelaide Kane, finally realizing her long-sought dream as she was named as successor to her cousin, Queen Elizabeth of the English court.
However, Mary seemed to be having second thoughts about it initially because once she accepts her cousin’s proposal and the heat of the Vatican already off on Elizabeth, they will be after her head.
The Vatican, after all, wants a man in power because the era of the series was still patriarchal in nature and most people back then believe that women are silly and whimsical and are not fit to lead, notes TV Fanatic.
One thing going against Mary as the new English ruler is her great compassion. She usually strives to get what she wants but not at the expense of killing people or taking the lives of others on the way to her goals. Thus, it is almost sure that she won’t have her cousin Elizabeth killed off.
However, Mary’s other dilemma is about her mandate to marry Dudley which is troublesome for her because she does not love him.
That’s in addition to the fact that she knows that Elizabeth loves Dudley and Dudley loves Elizabeth while her heart also pulls her toward Gideon.
Although he is a spy and a double agent at that, Gideon’s allegiance is not to Scotland but to Mary. It will be interesting to see Gideon weave his way with his new relationship with Queen Mary while still trying to play double agent for England and Mary.
A whole new country
Actress Adelaide Kane, in a recent interview, says that the second half of Season 3 of “Reign” is already a whole new chapter, a whole new country, and a whole new court for her character.
She disclosed that Queen Mary will have new friends and new enemies and that the TV series is being set for some really big storylines in Season 4.
Kane also explained that Mary’s life did not even start until she got to Scotland when things really kicked off for her, cites TV Line.
While she had a great time in France, it was only a small part of her life plus the fact that she did not get what she wanted in the French court.
Unfortunately, there would not be any room for Bash in the next chapter of “Reign” for Season 4 since actor Torrance Coombs plans to exit the TV series at the end of the season.
Kane said that the departure of Coombs and his Bash character is just a bummer but he has already lost traction in Scotland making him already unnecessary. The actress said that the story of Bash in “Reign” shall come to its conclusion very soon and his character has other avenues to explore that might necessarily be on screen.
Bigger and worse
The second half of Season 3 of “Reign” is going to be bigger and worse than ever, reveals Kane in an interview before the midseason premiere of the popular TV series on April 25.
Kane revealed then that Queen Mary is going to stick around and see if she can help Queen Catherine de Merci since the regency is in question at that moment.
She added that these are politically volatile times and there will be a lot of shifting of alliances and power in France right now so Queen Catherine could really use Queen Mary’s support as another queen and as another female ruler in such an incredibly misogynistic patriarchal time when people are trying to cut the French queen down.
