Looking at the discussions fans are having about the possible sequel, some apparently would prefer if it went its own way instead of trying to “inherit” gameplay features from other games by Rockstar.
The first game already had the misfortune of being jokingly referred to as “GTA with horses” by some fans, so we understand where those requests are coming from. And we could also imagine that the previous game was more of an experiment and the formula wasn’t that finely polished yet, something which could definitely change with the release of the sequel.
A bit more variety on the things the player can do in the vast world of a game like that is always a plus, and the developers can put significantly more effort in this regard now that the game will run on next-gen hardware.
Last but not least, we wouldn’t be surprised if they decided to go for something even more unconventional, such as integrating VR support. This could potentially work very well in a game like “Red Dead Redemption” if it’s implemented properly, and it would result in even better marketing potential for the title as the studio will benefit from the current VR craze. A companion app for mobile devices could also expand the gameplay possibilities, although whenever this idea is brought up in fan discussions, the argument about incompatible aesthetics is inevitably brought up.
