Rayman not Coming as Playable Character in Super Smash Bros; Critics Analyze Game’s State of Balance, And More

A video that came out not long ago managed to convince many fans of “Super Smash Bros” that Rayman is headed to the game as a playable character, in the 3DS and Wii U versions. The video looked quite legitimate, and showed the ability to unlock and choose Rayman as a playable character. In the end though, the original uploader – Omni Jacala – came forward and admitted that it was all a hoax.

In his revelation, he went in detail on how exactly he produced the hoax, explaining the effort he had to put in the fake video. He actually did a remarkably good job in animating Rayman and making his selection look legitimate; the video even had a custom icon for the character which was done in the same style as the rest of the game’s art.

In the end, Jacala also apologized to the game’s community for misleading them like that. The video caused a lot of discussion, and many were genuinely convinced that the video was true, which obviously led to a lot of disappointment once Jacala came out with his admission. Still, most seem to be taking the situation lightly, and there are no hard feelings on either side.

Meanwhile, some publications have taken the opportunity to take a step back and analyze the current state of the game, as far as its balance is concerned. “Super Smash Bros” is one of the most competitive titles in video gaming, on any platform – and of course, one of the favorite topics of its more prominent players is the game’s balance.

While people have been pointing out issues with this part of the game ever since it was released, according to some critics this is not actually such a big problem. In fact, some are claiming, it could be beneficial for the game in the long run.

It boils down to the fact that the game comprises of a large roster of unique characters, each with its flaws and advantages, and those characters are far from perfectly balanced. And those balancing issues are exactly what makes the game so fun in the long run, according to one analysis, as they allow players to discover new, game-changing mechanics that define entire playing styles. In “Smash Brothers”, players needed several years to discover one of the more prominent tactics in the game.

Now, with the prevalence of the Internet, this information can be shared and analyzed much more quickly, which has changed the way the game’s competitive communities work. There’s now a stronger focus on finding interesting techniques and strategies, and the game encourages players to explore the many different characters that it offers instead of sticking to one.
