The first “Prometheus” film shown in 2012 did not make any connection to the “Alien” franchise which began with the first movie directed by Ridley Scott and shown in 1979.
While it was a sleeper success in the box-office, most of the viewers hardly knew that “Prometheus” was part of a prequel trilogy to the “Alien” movie franchise.
The only common denominator of the film with the iconic film series is the deadly Xenomorph alien, which sort of made a cameo in the 2012 movie.
But all of that is bound to change with the upcoming release of “Prometheus 2” which has been aptly retitled late last year to “Alien: Covenant” and moves the prequel one step closer to the first “Alien” movie.
“Alien: Covenant” already has an October 6, 2017 playdate on global theaters.
Interestingly, in addition to the Xenomorph alien, “Alien: Covenant” and the first “Alien” film has Ridley Scott for a director so the connection is going to be finally established between the two franchises.
10-Year Time Jump
Janty Yates, the award-winning costume designer, in an interview, said that “Alien: Covenant” is actually set 10 years in the future beyond “Prometheus.”
The timeline of “Prometheus” was set in the last week of 2093, which means that it took place 28 years before the first sci-fi/horror film shown in 1979 starring Sigourney Weaver as Ellen Ripley, notes Blastr.
With the 10-year time jump of the sequel, it means that “Alien: Covenant,” will just be 18 years away from the events of “Alien.”
The same time jump could possibly be the reason why Noomi Rapace’s Elizabeth Shaw character shall only have a brief appearance in “Alien: Covenant.” Reports have it that Elizabeth Shaw will die in the “Prometheus” sequel and would leave synthetic droid David, played by Michael Fassbender, as they head for the Engineer’s homeworld onboard an alien spacecraft.
Latest reports also have it that Katherine Waterstone from the movie “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” has been cast as the lead character in “Alien: Covenant” named Daniels.
She is a crew member of the colony ship Covenant, which shall come across the mystery planet as well as David the droid. It would seem that she would be the new Shaw in the movie and the one before Ripley too.
Pushing for a Pretty Hard-R Rating
The first “Prometheus” movie earned an R rating but Director Ridley Scott cited it as merely a soft-R rating.
Now, he wants “Prometheus 2” to warrant a pretty hard-R rating this time around because he intends to take the sequel back to its roots, referring to the first “Alien” movie shown in 1979.
Compared to the tense terror of “Alien,” Prometheus was very soft with just the robo-Cesarian pushing it over the top. Scott intends to bring the same tense terror to “Alien: Covenant,” notes the Independent of UK.
In an interview during the recently-held 2016 Golden Globes awards, Scott narrated that he always remembered walking down the edge in Saint Louis when they were previewing “Alien.” He said that he could not sit through the film one more time. So he walked down the edge into the kitchen scene when John Hurt started to bring up his breakfast. Scott realized right there how pretty scary the film was.
Scott explained that he felt a sense of responsibility that he had gone too far because it was extreme. He promised to try and do that again with “Alien: Covenant,” but much worse.
With “Alien: Covenant” hitting theaters in about 20 months time, Scott has all the time he needs to out-chestburst himself with the “Prometheus” sequel.
Scott has all the intentions to recapture the suspense, surprise, and gore of the first “Alien” movie which obviously had fans of the sci-fi horror action series quite excited.
Previously known as “Prometheus 2,” “Alien: Covenant” will take place a decade after the first “Prometheus” film. Scott also confirmed that the upcoming movie will lead right into the backdoor of “Alien.”

I remember Ridley Scott saying that a Promethius sequel would move even further away from the Alien franchise at one point if he got to make, and now it seems that he has changed his mind about this. What a sell out..
