According to the latest reports, Pacific Rim 2 started filming just this weekend. The announcement was made by director Steven DeKnight himself. He recently shared a picture from day one of shooting in Australia. The image was shared on his Twitter account, and it was further confirmed by John Boyega, the film’s star.
He posted a pic of his script on Instagram as well. Thanks to Boyega and DeKnight, we now know that this movie won’t just be called Pacific Rim 2. Nobody wants a simple number attached to the same movie name. In reality, the film will be called Pacific Rim: Maelstrom, when it finally releases.
DeKnight took some time away from the usual filming so as to answer some fan queries and reveal some new details regarding the upcoming movie. Right now, they are shooting in Australia but soon they’ll begin filming in China as well. No other casting information was confirmed, besides his core group of actors, in addition to Scott Eastwood, Boyega and Cailee Spaeny.
They will be heading up the sequel, but Nick Tarabay was also added to the cast. Previously, DeKnight and Tarabay had worked together on Starz series, Spartacus. It is a pretty tumultuous time at the moment, but people appreciate what DeKnight offered regarding a robot hug.
There has been a lot of rumors about the ‘end of days, ’ and we need something which can stop the apocalypse. That being said, the major news is that Pacific Rim sequel is finally in production. As mentioned before, the film has an official title which is something entirely unexpected.
The new photos from the set suggest that the title is perfect for a lot of reasons. If you didn’t know already, ‘Maelstrom’ is another name for a whirlpool. At the same time, it indicates that it will be a time of strife again, for everybody in that universe. The director of the film has already confirmed it on Twitter.
We have to consider the fact that our heroes managed to defeat a Level 5 Kaiju and also blew up the rift from where the monsters emerged. We can simply imagine what the Jaegers will be facing this time around.
It has been declared that Maelstrom is the working title for now before the final confirmation is made official. John Boyega was on set during the first day of production, and he talked about it briefly on his official Instagram page. He is cast as Stacker Pentecost’s son, who was portrayed by Idris Elba in the first film.
A short video of the dark weather conditions in Sydney was posted by Boyega. He said that they have gray skies, but it is still good enough to put the beatdown on some Kaiju monsters. He further added, “Sydney sorry for the exploding buildings and giant lizard sightings. It’s for your safety -Pentecost.”
We know very little about the plot of Maelstrom and if we’ll be introduced to any other new characters. Till now, we have seen Cailee Spaeny, Levi Meaden, Jing Tian, and Ivanna Sakhno in the cast but their roles are still unannounced.
According to the latest speculations, one of the stars in the first film, Charlie Hunnam, will not be returning but this hasn’t been confirmed by Guillermo Del Toro. It is also unclear whether Rinko Kikuchi has been cast as well. The script was worked upon by Derek Connolly, Emily Carmichael and story creator Del Toro.
