Pornhub’s Popularity Briefly Undermined by Apple’s iPhone 7 Event, Things Back to Normal Now!

Pornhub, probably the most popular pornographic website on the Internet, is also known for frequently entertaining their users (especially the tech geeks among them) with information about the way their site works, and details about traffic spikes/drops during interesting periods. Their team has already provided us with some interesting insights in the past, and now they are claiming that Apple have apparently dealt a blow to their traffic with the announcement of the iPhone 7.

According to the site’s reports, they saw a drop of about 9% in their traffic at the time Apple were making their major announcement. Following the event however, viewer numbers quickly climbed back up to their usual levels, and even saw a brief spike beforehand.

And while Kim Kardashian was trying to get some extra attention on her photoshoot with ridiculous claims like “those photos will break the Internet”, Apple showed what it takes to actually make an impact on the traffic stats of a popular website.

Pornhub have been very open about such statistics in the past, much to the delight of their users and even those who aren’t particularly fond of the website. Geeks in general have been quite fond of the regular releases by the company, and we’ve seen some interesting articles by them regarding their traffic patterns in the past.

For example, it was curious to see the porn genre preferences of different US states, and the company is also trying to leverage the current US Presidential elections, showing some relevant statistics from time to time.

Not everyone has been supportive of Pornhub in those cases, as can be expected from the site’s nature. Some have been very critical of everything related to Pornhub, claiming that it should not be given any kind of platform for exposure.

And yet, the site is one of the most visited ones on the planet, and they aren’t afraid to speak up about their trends either. Pornhub have also been quite close to their community, having representatives in various popular messaging boards and communities such as reddit. In the end, they’re a brand name most people can easily recognize, and the company has used this fact in some clever ways so far.

As for the stats about their recent traffic drop, it was interesting to note that those who were watching on an iOS device apparently made up for about 35% of their traffic, about in line with the operating system’s market coverage.

Will those numbers change in a few days when the iPhone 7 comes out? And if they do, what direction will the trend move in? Some see it as entirely possible that Apple may lose some users over the next months due to the release of the iPhone 7, as the device is seen as highly controversial and it’s still a hot topic among gadget lovers.

It’s also interesting to note that the site’s traffic apparently shot up for a brief period before going back down. It’s not clear if this traffic spike was due to people holding their urges so they could see the Apple event in real time or something else, but it’s a curious detail in any case.

iPhone 7

Needless to say, Apple have been completely quiet on that issue and don’t want to even touch it. We can understand the company’s stance, as they probably don’t want to associate their brand name with Pornhub for no good reason, but at the same time, we can’t help but feel that they must be at least a little bit proud of themselves.
