Just as rumors say, the Season 3 finale of British-American horror drama TV series “Penny Dreadful” served as the series finale as the popular show has come to an end.
Series creator John Logan himself confirmed that the show will not return for Season 4 anymore. Speaking to Deadline, Logan simply confirmed that after the Season 3 finale, it was the end of the award-winning series.
In the two-hour series finale, Reeve Carney’s Dorian Gray decided to remove himself from Lily’s mission. He kicked the members of her army out of his place and snapped Justine’s neck when she refused.
A chained Lily, who was left in Victor’s lab, had a heartfelt conversation with her captor. He told her about the unfortunate death of her daughter Sarah.
Lily narrates that she was working as a prostitute in order to support her daughter but it was not enough and it was too late when she learned of her child’s death. Upon hearing her devastating story, Victor broke her chains and released her.
The episode, entitled “The Blessed Dark” also saw the Creature’s former wife learning about the idea of resurrection. This gave them a chance to bring their dead son back to life.
However, he ended up choosing not to resurrect their child rather than give him a cursed life as an undead.
Meanwhile, Timothy Dalton’s Malcolm Murray and the others met up with Vanessa’s newfound allies and Patti Lupone’s Dr. Seward realizes her assistant’s true intentions while Cat helped in fending off their vampire enemies.
They also hypnotized Renfield for the exact location of Dracula’s lair. Kaeteney reminded Ethan that he was the only one who can save Vanessa from the dark.
While the others fought with Dracula’s minions, Ethan went to the lair at the end of the tunnel where he found Vanessa.
Vanessa told him that she’s already beyond saving from anyone. Ethan tried reasoning that God is waiting for her soul, which Vanessa also believed. Vanessa then asked Ethan to kill her to save the others from evil.
The major plot twist was when Eva Green’s Vanessa Ives was shot dead by Josh Harnett’s Ethan Chandler in order to save the world from the wrath of Christian Camargo’s Dracula.
After Vanessa’s funeral was held, Rory Kinnear’s the Creature read William Wordsworth’s “Intimations of Immortality” and the screen flashed the words ‘The End’.
As if Vanessa’s death wasn’t heartbreaking enough, fans were even more saddened with the show’s cancellation. In an interview with TV Line, Logan and Showtime President David Nevins spoke about the decision to end the series and to not announce that the Season 3 finale will be the last of the show.
According to Nevins, while he had considered promoting Season 4 as the final season of the 19th century-inspired TV series, it just seemed the wrong way to go about things.
Nevins praised Logan in giving “Penny Dreadful” a chance to have its own rhythm and create its own destiny.
The Showtime boss explains that it wasn’t just the spirit of the show. He adds that he always knew that “Penny Dreadful” would not be a six or seven-year show, but he had seen that the series was getting deeper and richer every season.
Unfortunately, when Logan told him that Vanessa will meet her demise in the Season 3 finale, he knew that it was the end of it.
As for Logan, he says that he had known about the decision to end “Penny Dreadful” with Season 3 for quite some time.
In a video posted on Showtime’s YouTube account, Logan admits that he always envisioned Vanessa’s story to be a three-season arc. Logan says that the show has always been about Vanessa and her struggle with faith.

I saw the ending thinking Vanessa was going to be resurrected. Then I saw The End and I was shocked and horrified!!! No no no no no. I had to Google to make sure it had really happened! I truly loved all the main characters and hope this writer will keep us glued to our TVs with another series. He’s remarkable!!!
