It is water under the bridge now but Showtime CEO David Nevins confirmed in a recent interview that he was indeed considering giving the British-American horror drama TV series “Penny Dreadful” a fourth and final season even before it ended during its Season 3 finale in June this year.
However, Nevins soon realized why it’s important to stick with John Logan’s plan of ending the show after just 27 episodes.
Nevins explained the process behind the decision to end “Penny Dreadful” with the death of Eva Green’s beloved character, Vanessa Ives, was already planned right from the start.
Though many believe that “Penny Dreadful’s” finale was a little abrupt, Showtime thinks that it was a bold and necessary move on Logan’s part. Hence, continuing the series beyond Vanessa’s death and Logan’s initial plan was no longer essential, notes Chatt Sports Net.
Even if the fan clamor for the series’ continuation would continue to grow, Showtime is unlikely to revive the series without John Logan on board. It became clear that the combination of Vanessa and John are the glue that holds everything together.
Fans want some closure
There are reports saying that fans are clamoring for the much-needed closure for their favorite supernatural characters.
They have another reason to hope and believe for “Penny Dreadful” Season 4, largely due in part to the developments in its counterpart comic book series.
The “Penny Dreadful” comic book series will reportedly unravel a plot where Sir Malcolm and Vanessa Ives reunite.
With this in mind, the door for “Penny Dreadful” Season 4 has been left wide open and the fans are holding their breath if the showrunner and the producers will make their move or not.
If the writers for “Penny Dreadful” Season 4 will follow the storyline of the comic book series, fans can expect Vanessa Ives to come back from the afterlife, after her dramatic death in “Penny Dreadful” Season 3, details Game & Guide.
The fans of Vanessa Ives and the gang clearly were not prepared to have their favorite show end abruptly in “Penny Dreadful” Season 3. Fans were reportedly disappointed with Logan’s decision to end the series when it had actually a lot of potentials to go further.
The cancellation of “Penny Dreadful” Season 4 was considered by fans to be a bad decision by the network.
Trolling heavily in most episodes
When a viewer watches a TV series and he can hardly wait to get to the end because of overbearing dialogues from some of the characters without really progressing the plotline, the show has become a bore.
That is actually what happened to the third season of “Penny Dreadful” that its viewership and rating significantly declined prompting Showtime network to air its last two episodes back-to-back and no longer renewing the show for a fourth season.
While “Penny Dreadful” Season 3 only had nine episodes, it became a bit of a drag rather early that some viewers felt that there were more than mere nine episodes.
John Logan is one of the great writers of the current genre but he seemed to have trolled mightily and heavily in Season 3 that some critics felt that he does not know how to intermingle all the plots and characters that he just put on the table.
One other thing that frustrated fans about “Penny Dreadful” Season 3 is the fact that only in the last few minutes had Vanessa Ives, played by Eva Green, and Ethan Chandler, played by Josh Hartnett, did the two characters had a scene together.
Their brewing romance in Season 1 helped “Penny Dreadful” gain good traction among viewers and their romance in Season 2 keep the show’s ratings at bay. Unfortunately, Logan did not think that it is important so when it happened towards the end, it was no longer possible to undo what has already been done.
