The British-American horror drama TV series “Penny Dreadful” bid its goodbye with its ninth and final episode of Season 3 that aired on Showtime in June and fans simply could not take the fact that their favorite show had to end abruptly.
Some are arguing that “Penny Dreadful” is bringing a lot of viewers so it is quite surprising that Showtime decided to cancel a top-rating show.
However, the figures would indicate that the first season of “Penny Dreadful” was lording the ratings alright. But since the middle of the second season, it has been downhill from there. Thus, some critics also believe that the reason why the TV series was abruptly canceled is because of its poor ratings.
Some fans are saying that “Penny Dreadful” may live on for more seasons even without Vanessa Ives, played by Eva Green, in the story.
As a matter of fact, there are now reports saying that a spinoff series would be developed to sort of continue the storyline of “Penny Dreadful” following the interview with Showtime president David Nevins, who reportedly hinted of its possibility.
The same rumors are saying that the spinoff may take place on Netflix since the streaming service has been known for picking up canceled shows from other networks, notes the Parent Herald.
To be filmed in Egypt
While the speculations have yet to be confirmed, there are reports saying that the spinoff shall be filmed in Egypt and may focus on other characters.
Based on the Season 3 of “Penny Dreadful,” Vanessa seemed to be grooming Caitriona as her successor, which led to speculations that Caitriona may become the new lead female protagonist in the spinoff.
As of now, the toss-up of the rumors is a spinoff or a Season 4 of “Penny Dreadful,” any which way would sure to excite the fans of the TV series.
However, based on the recent statement of executive producer and series creator John Logan, it is all over for “Penny Dreadful.” He said that he is no longer keen on coming up with a Season 4 for the TV series nor he is interested in developing storylines for the rumored spinoff, notes Movie News Guide.
Still, there is now an ongoing petition on change.org asking Showtime and John Logan to provide a Season 4 for “Penny Dreadful” coming from a group of fans of the show who call themselves as the Dreadfuls.
They claimed that they have greatly enjoyed “Penny Dreadful” on Showtime network so they believe that they deserve another season from the actors, writers, and everyone associated with the TV show, whom they described as top notch in their respective craft.
It’s curtain call for the show
Despite rumors that “Penny Dreadful” might get revived for a fourth season following its rather abrupt and forced ending during the Season 3 finale, creator John Logan says otherwise.
The showrunner said that the series and its storyline are all drained out and it is time for the series to end on Season 3. He also denied speculations that “Penny Dreadful” would have its Season 4 aired on Netflix or any other network for that matter.
However, loyal fans of the Showtime TV series are all hopeful that a Season 4 of their favorite show will eventually happen although nothing seems to be going on as far as discussions with other networks or streaming service are concerned.
The disappointment of fans cannot equate to the disappointing ratings of “Penny Dreadful” Season 3 so much so that the eighth and ninth episode of Season 3 were actually aired back-to-back as if the network really wanted to get the show off the air and its programming really fast.
