If viewers would go by the timeline of the first two seasons of the British-American horror drama TV series “Penny Dreadful” on Showtime, then Season 3 would most likely premiere this coming spring.
It can be recalled that Season 1 of “Penny Dreadful” aired its eight episodes in April 2014. The 10 episodes of Season 2 began airing in May 2015. So it is likely that the third season, which shall have nine episodes, would premiere either in April or May this year.
Viewers of the popular TV series are already excited for the show’s third season given the cliffhanger that was left during the Season 2 finale which saw the main protagonists led by Vanessa Ives, played by Eva Green, parting ways with one another.
According to Bustle, the show’s second season dodged the sophomore slump curse that seem to have been bestowed on many TV series, by introducing new characters and throwing the familiar ones into even more dreadful situations.
Season 3 will continue to build on the gains of the first two seasons of “Penny Dreadful” by remaining unpredictably creepy in a lot of positive ways while maintaining the consistency that Vanessa Ives will never be at peace with herself.
An award will give the show a boost
Eva Green is nominated for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Television Series Drama in the 2016 Golden Globe, whose awarding rites is slated on January 10.
Should Green gets the nod, “Penny Dreadful” would surely earn a lot of attention which could make Season 3 more successful and watched than the first two seasons of the TV series.
It will certainly give the show a rating boost but it seems that the French actress is not putting all her marbles onto the nomination as she would rather focus on delivering great performance as the confused Ms. Ives in “Penny Dreadful.”
Season 3 of “Penny Dreadful” was announced by Showtime president David Nevins in June 2015 or even before Season 2 drew to a close in July.
The Showtime press release then stated that Showtime is fully supportive of the series because of the brilliant writing of John Logan. It added that the amazingly talented ensemble of the TV series continues to draw a passionate, global fan base into the meticulously crafted world of “Penny Dreadful.”

Production and filming for Season 3 of “Penny Dreadful” have begun in Dublin, Ireland sometime in November. But the first official photo that came out from the set showed nothing of the setting as it only featured the returning Patti LuPone as American psychiatrist Dr. Seward comforting Vanessa Ives wearing a straightjacket in what looks to be a padded cell.
The image prompted fans to assume that Vanessa Ives will be committed to an asylum. Reports also have it that Dr. Seward shall be treating Vanessa through an unconventional approach. It can be recalled that during the Season 2 finale of “Penny Dreadful”, Vanessa’s faith in God has reached its limits and she was even seen burning the cross on the fireplace.
The good news for the fans of the show is that Patti LuPone will not just be returning as a guest star but as a regular cast member of the popular TV series.
But the latest photo leak about the filming of “Penny Dreadful” already showed the undead Lily Frankenstein, played by Billie Piper, and Ethan Chandler, played by Josh Hartnett already on location.
This only means that Ethan Chandler would likely return to London. It can be recalled that during the Season 2 finale, he was extradited to America after admitting to the Scotland Yard authorities that he was responsible for all the grisly deaths at the Mariners’ Inn as he turned into a werewolf.
Meanwhile, Fashion & Style offered a different take on the return of Patti LuPone to “Penny Dreadful” as Dr. Seward.
